ISO TECH oscilloscope firmware?
« on: July 29, 2018, 12:08:29 pm »
Hello,

Anyone know where I can find firmware for ISO TECH oscilloscopes?

IDS-2000 series.

Manufacturere website has nothing.

The scopes do look identical to GWINSTEK offerings.

Wonder if the firmware is compatible. Any pointers appreciated.

Thanks.

After a few telephone calls, it would appear that the ISO-TECH brand belongs to Radio Spares. It's one of their own 'in-house' brands.

RS technical support told me there are no firmware updates and the products should just work out of the box.

So unless you can get firmware to load from a different manufacturer, you're stuck with whatever bugs you find.

You can always try if you experience bugs. If you have not bought the scope yet then it is probably better to buy the original from GW Instek.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

You should be able to flash the Instek firmware onto an ISO-Tech scope as the only thing in house is the change of label from GW Instek to Iso-Tech (now RSPro)

You do however run the risk of bricking your scope if it fails so it depends if whatever issue you're having with current firmware is worth the risk

Please can you tell us what bugs you have found? There may be workarounds that are less drastic than installing another manufacturer's firmware.

Hello, I don't own an iso-tech, i have a gwinstek. I was looking at buying another with better specs and noticed they were cheaper.

Just wondered about the firmware situation. A lot of hardware is released these days with beta software, and you get a fully working product 1 - 2 years after. It's been that way for a long time. Not calling out iso-tech or RS here. First to market and all that.

If gw are releasing firmware for their own line (and they have, many times) then you have to wonder about what you're actually getting on an iso-tech.

Hey,
I just bought a IDS-2202A from a auction site for £240. The unit I received was boxed and came with firmware version 1.22. I don't think there's a newer version for the GW instek branded scopes out there, so I think you're good to go?

OK, scratch my previous post.

I've found that the GDS-2000A series has a 1.30 firmware file available. I downloaded this onto a usb key and plugged it into my IDS-2202A, then used the file browser to select and run the update (see photo). The scope then locked up for about 5-10 minutes, before telling me to power cycle it. Once this was done, the scope booted up STILL with the ISO-TECH branding but now I have V1.30! (see second photo)

So, you can get these ISO-TECH scopes, upgrade them with GW INSTEK files and don't have any issues.

Kind regards,
Marcus

That's very nice to hear! I just bought the IDS-2104 at H4AB in England for £399.
Thanks for your info!

Guys, are you satisfied with VPO?

Please watch linked video. It's a simple 1kHz sine from my noisy analog function generator.
I change the time base during the video after I pressed the default button and the autoset button.
By pressing 'Default' button scope will switch to
- vector mode
- 240ms persistence
- 50% waveform intensity.

My signal is not aliasing. There is still 1k point for one horizontal division at 100ms/div 'Roll' setting with 10k acqusition memory.

Sorry for video and audio quality.

Newest 1.36 FW on scope. Is there any hope that they will improve this in the near future?

I know this is an old thread but it is the one that came up at the top of the list when I did a websearch for "RSPRO oscilloscope firmware".

I can confirm that today I successfully updated a RSPRO RSMSO-2202E to version 1.42 using update file FW_GDS-2000E_v1_42.upg from the GW Instek website.

The original "RS" splash screen and manufacturer URl "//www.rspro.com" were retained, however I feel RS are giving their customer's a poor service as the URL only links to their site in the hope of selling you more stuff, there is no option to download new firmware or utilities from there, hence unless you are bold enough to assume it is just a re-branded GW Instek model and risk installing the GW Instek firmware you are stuck with any existing bugs or shortcomings.

I got the scope for a very good price on an auction site and I am extremely happy with it, but if I had bought it direct from RS at normal price I would feel very let down by their lack of support.

Steve.
