Issue finding Oscilloscopes!
« on: August 31, 2016, 03:23:12 pm »
Hello people,

I am an ECE student second year in university that is a beginner in electronics (I have been working for some time with some power supply projects with microcontroller usage and need to troubleshoot some issues with noise generated by power supply when having a load) and I am not able to use oscilloscopes in the university since they don't allow us students to use the lab unless we have a course. I have been looking around for 3 months trying to get an analog oscilloscope. However there seems to be an issue of shipping to my country on ebay. The prices of tektronix scopes go up to 375$ refurbished and working ones usually get bids on it, which still reach the price of >220$ + shipping to my country costs around 140$ - 250$ depending on the weight. I went to the electronics market in my country to find that only one store sells oscilloscopes mixed with other equipment/components. I have found an instek 100Mhz model for 1000$ dollars which is a very high price considering my student status. So, I still am looking for units on ebay unless there are people here who extra TEK scopes for sale and direct shipping to United Arab Emirates. just yesterday I have encountered someone selling a 10MHz oscilloscope  AVO A101 model to be exact , but couldn't buy it since i was looking for something that can display atleast 50Mhz. At last resort I may go for a rigol 100mhz oscilloscope if can't find any analog scope that has good pricing. Please help me out if you can, and I apologize for my inexperience.

Best advice: Get a 50MHz Rigol DS1054Z 'scope and unlock it to get 100MHz.

All you need is a key generator and the serial number (google for "riglol").

Thank you for your quick reply, this seems like a nice idea, but still Digital have lower sampling rate than the analog ones (smoother output). Would it be okay for testing power supply circuits or similar?

Don't bother to look for an analog scope if you can affort a digital oscilloscope (DSO). Nowadays DSOs are way better than analog scopes.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

It's actually the opposite. Analog ones look smoother because they aren't capable of displaying the cosmic background noise. Digital ones are telling more truth.

See this video:

Yes.

you will be looking at slow, maybe also non repetitive signal, transients.
you need a storage scope, analog or digital.

Thank you for clarifying the difference, I'm going to start looking for a Rigol DS1054Z Oscilloscope here, and on ebay
