My effort at reducing Rigol DS2072 fan noise
« on: December 05, 2015, 10:00:54 PM »
Cutting away metal grille on fan outlet reduces turbulent flow and noise. Degree of noise reduction is not as apparent in video because when the metal grille is removed the reduced rushing noise is countered by the increased audio sensitivity of the volume compression of phone taking video. Putting plastic case back on does reduce the improvement though.

Nice!
Thick designed fan guard is common to make the fan noise larger.
I used to remove them and replace it with circle wire type fan guard.

Nice job, I hate the fan noise as well.  But what about EMI/EMC?
Will it affect sensitive measurements in a noisy environment?
Just thinking.
The difference between theory and practice is less in theory than
the difference between theory and practice in practice.
Expensive tools cannot compensate for lack of experience.

EMI/EMC? I imagine that is possible. The frequency of what escapes would depend on the size of the fan hole. Maybe someone can calculate that, but 50mm is a full wavelength at 6GHz so it may not be a problem. Not completely sure, but you would expect things to be degraded maybe a tiny bit.
