My second dead Keysight scope?
« on: February 07, 2017, 08:09:21 pm »
Not sure if it's my super bad luck, but my second KS scope just died for no apparent reason...
So starting form the first scope, an MSOX3104A, which dead of the infamous not booting problem, said to be caused by NAND corruption that occurs on MSOX2K/3K series.
Well, thanks to KS' legendary service, it got sorted out pretty quickly and they picked up my scope, fitted with a new ACQ board, and shipped it back to me.
The second scope, an MSOX6004A, is half dead. It still functions as normal, but occasionally, though very rare, it freezes and needs a reboot.
I'm okay with such minor annoyance, but what I fear is if this means any deeper, more profound issues that can completely kill the scope at a later time, worse if after warranty date.

I like KS for its high performance test gears, and its legendary cust service, but come on, every single KS gear I own has some issues, why?
My MSOX3104A died of NAND corruption.
My MSOX6004A freezes.
My MSOX6004A's logic probe is DOA, thanks Daniel for sending me a new one :-+.
My U1461B has buggy menu and buzzer.
My U1461B's PC software can't even log data in any sensible format.
My U1461B's extra fine tips (2 sets!) are all DOA.

Edit: added video.

Update 06/28/17: crashed again, see video here:

No, it is a officially recognized problem by Keysight for certain models and production dates...

Even they can make an error.. But they usually take care of the problems...

The newest firmware has an extra copy of the boot section in the flash, if it fails to boot a number of times it automatically switches over to the copy.
Keyboard error: Press F1 to continue.

Not your week, eh? Bad luck happens in threes. Make sure you are wearing your anti-static strap in wired mode for the rest of the week!  :-DD

That's really frustrating, I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble. If you know of anything specific causing the freeze, please e-mail it to me so I can get it to the QA & software team.

Also, make sure you're running the latest firmware!

Regarding the NAND concern, updating firmware is never a bad thing! More recent revisions have more recovery & correction.

I have a few Keysight scopes in my lab, including a MSOX3104A and a MSOX6004A, use them all the time and never had a problem with them. So may be as others have suggested, an updated FW will help you.

Perhaps specific to NAND support, but in general updating firmware on a Keysight scope *can* be a bad thing.  There's no going back to the previous version if a new show-stopping bug is introduced.

Final update: [...]

Glad your problem got solved!
But did it really take them four weeks?

(I understand this was a free repair, under warranty or goodwill -- or was there an invoice included?)

Good to hear that they were able to replicate and hopefully solve Blueskull. It sucks sending stuff off for repair when you can't provide a sure fire way to make the fault occur.

Update: after 3 months of normal use, it crashed exactly the same way, again. ...

Sounds like Keysight would be very interested in that occurance, or at least they should be.  :-//
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

blueskull and scopes just don't get along. Hopefully Keysight will just swap it out for a 100% brand new one for you.

Do you know what was fixed on your 6000X scope last time?
