Need new scope to about 1000$
« on: January 07, 2018, 04:53:08 am »
Hi j need new scope to my lab.
J already have rigol ds1054z hacked to 100mhz, 24mpts etc..  and Micsig Tbook Mini TO1104 with all options.
Micsig is super, portable, much easier to use and with similar parameters like my hacked rigol.

I would like to replace the rigol ds1054z with something else.
I'm thinking about rigol ds2072a, because we can hack it up to 300mhz and is quite cheap.
It will give me more other measurements, it would be a great complement to micsig.

Question, ds2072a is already a bit on the market. Can I get something better? For the price of about 1000$?
Siglent? Owon? GW Instek? Something used from ebay?

Earlier I liked the 12bit XDS Owon, until I did not watch the review from dave.
Is there a chance that they will improve it? How does Owon support his products ??

Thank you for your help and knowledge.

May be worth checking Keysight infinivision 1000x series if you don't mind 2 channels especially, DSOX1102G @ US $847. Comes with a arbitrary waveform generator

more details in https://www.keysight.com/en/pcx-2759552/infiniivision-1000-x-series-oscilloscopes?cc=US&lc=eng

Other that comes to my mind is R&S HMO series. These start about US $1000, generally pricer and options are always extra. There are some great oscilloscopes from Siglent but these are same category as Rigol 1000z. Btw I am very happy with my Siglent 1202X-E. Good value for money (US $360 delivered) and a very decent scope. It is in fact cheaper than my Fluke 87v multimeter.  ;)

I would suggest against OWON, they are not known for good quality and accuracy and not sure if their after sales support is good.
Folks I am getting back in Electronics game after 18 odd years :)

The GW Instek GDS2204E may worth considering.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

The Rigol NA clearance page has a couple DS2XX0 series scopes under a thousand and a MSO2000 series for $1200 or so, if you look towards that route.

Siglent had a previous gen 2000 series four channel on theirs, but not any more - though a 2000X series Siglent could be a reasonable option for about that budget.

For that ballpark you could even pickup a early 2000s era LeCroy scope on ebay with quite a bit of bandwidth.  A large form factor and comparatively small sample memory, but some more comprehensive math and visualization options in a lot of cases as well as extra bandwidth and sample rate.

I do not need 4 channels in the second oscilloscope. Two are enough for me. If necessary, I have micsig
I would prefer a larger band. Around 200MHz 2Gs / s.

DS2072A give me after hack 300MHz 2Gs/s 56mpts 50k wfs/s it costs 800$ + 23% taxes in my country

Proposed oscilloscopes that fit in the budget do not give as much as rigol.
Unless there are some hacks and I do not know about them?

I do not know it is possible to hunt for some used lecroy at this price?

Another option would be to look for a used >500MHz scope on Ebay. There are many out there from Agilent, Lecroy and Tektronix. It won't be small or quiet though.

Talk to the local distributor for Keysight and Tek as well, they usually have former demo models laying around in that price range. That's how I got my MSOX2012 for a decent price. But keep in mind, you're not paying for the hardware as much as the software. The main difference between these scopes is that those from R&S, Keysight, and Tek will behave "better" and more predictable (and tend to have a better UI design), while the Rigol might do some unexpected things when you near the border of its capabilities or have buttons in weird places.

I worked several years on agilent/keysight MSOX4000 and tektronix TDS7000, I know what premium products look like. But I can not afford it. I am looking for a good value for money.

Tektronix, Keysight, R & S will not give me the bandwidth I need. At this price level, of course.

The topic is a bit frozen, meaning there is nothing behind with the hacked rigiol?
Meet the criterion, 200mhz and 2gs for this price?

For 2Gs/s you'll need to get into the $5000 area to get something decent.

I think the hacked Rigol is the only choice for those specs.

Brand new to the US market is the Siglent 1204X-E 200 MHz 4 Channel at around $800.  Search around for reviews and videos.

I think the DSOX 2000 series can be upgraded to 200MHz, is that so? If so, check this one.

Otherwise, keep an eye out for DS4000 series from Rigol, which can be upgraded to 500MHz and are 4GSPS.

You're not going to find anything used with the Tektronix nameplate on it that comes anywhere near the hacked DS2072A's stated specs.

On ebay I see a TDS5032B (2 channel, 350mhz BW, 2M sample depth on each channel, up to 5Gs/s) and a TDS784A (4 channel, 512K sample depth divided by number of active channels, up to 4Gs/s) both at around $1,000.

Of course, with the Tektronix scopes, you can be assured that the scope operates as expected, and the bugs were worked out BEFORE the scope actually shipped.

Since you have the Micsig there's no better value than the Rigol to compliment it. For an only scope I'd get an Instek but those are a bit more then 1k for the high bw multichannel models i think.

Edit : Indeed if available in Poland the used market might be better for what you're looking for.

At the local auction, there is a Tektronix DPO3012 available.
The auction ends on Monday, I will try to bid for it.
We can hack it up to 500mhz.

Thank you for the tip about TDS5032B. This is very good equipment for me.
995 $ + 100 $ shipment + 300 $ import fees, a little more than intended to spend.
But I will think about it as an alternative.

I won the DPO3012 auction, at a very good price, but without probes :(
Now I'm waiting for him, and I will try hack it to 500mhz.

Yes, the RTB2000 series is probably the coolest piece of equipment at the moment.

Now your nightmare has started. It's a very slow machine. I have the MDO version at work, as well as 2 different DPO versions, one being 2024B and one being 5204B (non-SSD version). Both have very slow UI.

Uuu pity that I did not know before, it's so bad? I guess it will not be worse than rigol. On youtube it seems to be very responsive.

On the same level, both very slow (compared with Keysight).

The law of conservation of bugs states that the total amount of  bugs of an isolated system remains constant. Bugs can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, they can be transformed from one form to another.

R&S RTC1000 aew low cost oscilloscope under 1k Euro

https://www.rohde-schwarz.com/nl/product/rtc1000-productstartpage_63493-515585.html
It seems overpriced compared to the Keysight 1000X series
