New video: In-depth testing of the cheapo $5 multimeter
« on: February 27, 2015, 10:30:10 pm »
I took one of the cheapo multimeters along to the City of Arts and Sciences for some really in-depth testing...pass or fail?

Edit: Duh! I just spotted a big editing error - repeated scene in the middle!  :palm:   :-[  Fixed.

After seeing this video, I decided to sell NYSE:DHR (Danaher Corp).  :-DD

You should have saved this video for April 1, 2015.

I have used those al cheapo's like forever and I am still using them, but I am going to buy a Brymen anytime soon. The video is very funny and the result is very suprising, I like it.

I still think those meters are crap (but not useless). Try to remove the pcb and reinstall it. The lcd won't work again. Or try overvolting the inputs. Don't hold the meter!

Also, these meters aren't all the same. Everyone is different, and I think the newer ones are worse The trick to the robustness is of course the low component count.

Before I get a Brymen I am going to use the Victor/Sparkfun VC830L, another el cheapo, but recommended here on the forum: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/sparkfun-multimeter-teardown/

Yes, they take quite good measurements.

Try to remove the pcb and reinstall it. The lcd won't work again.

I took the PCBs out in my original teardown video. That scene didn't make it into the final edit but they still worked afterwards.

Yep. There's not really much to break inside.

Thanks!

I'm still learning to use the camera and video editing software ... this seemed like a fun thing to do.

I can't really be a serious test gear reviewer because I only own enough equipment for about three videos (I assume nobody wants to see another video on the DS1050Z).

If people want to start mailing me stuff though, I won't complain...  ;)
