Old Dick Smith Multimeter?
« on: May 07, 2016, 04:06:05 am »
Hi all,

Since I bought the EEVBLOG BM235 DMM, I thought I would get rid of some of my older DMM's that I don't use anymore, and I found one that I believe it from Dick Smith.
Product code is Q1051 and there is what I think is a date code 02/99.

Planning to send it in to Dave later on.

Ah good point. No worries. I'll wait until I have some other more interesting gear to send him. Thank you :)

I was going to say the same, did Uni-T clone the 830?

They're quite different on the inside though.

Ohho!

It looks MORE ROBUST then noname 830 meters!

DIP components and MOV for input protection and additional voltage reference  is not common for cheap DMMs
Compare it with nowday noname https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/dt-838-digital-multimeter-just-curious/

Looks like good  piece of nostalgy of 90th )))))))

Or the DT-830 meters are a clone of this one.

I wonder how much different it is.
I can see the same overall structure but with more through-hole stuff and the ICL7106 chip-under-a-blob on a separate PCB.

If you look around a bit on the internet you can sorta see the evolution of this meter from cheap to cheaper.
For example:

DT-830 reviews tend to rather negative but I would be interested in an overview of it's history and lineage.
