Philips PM 5138 A service manual needed
« on: December 31, 2014, 10:11:54 am »
Hello

Does anyone have schematics for Philips PM 5138 A function generator.
My problem is that front output module is badly damaged. With out the card it works fine. Not 100% sure but it seems like it.
The output board number is 4012 110 13953 FLUKE HH. If some one knows place to buy replacement board any tip wold be welcome.
My mail is dream(dot)mods(at)gmail.com.

People who misuse test equipment in such way should be prohibited handling anything electrical or even metal for life. Go back to wooden spoons and bowls.

From Aesop's Fables:
A Boy was bathing in a river and got out of his depth, and was in great danger of being drowned. A man who was passing along a road heard his cries for help, and went to the riverside and began to scold him for being so careless as to get into deep water, but made no attempt to help him. "Oh, sir," cried the Boy, "please help me first and scold me afterwards."
Moral: Give assistance, not advice, in a crisis.

To the OP: I used to own one of these and I might have a schematic, but it might be just an owner's manual. I'll look when I get home tonight.

I had the same instrument a few years back and repaired it with the schematics but I am not sure if I stored the paperwork. I will look after the holiday.

Thanks i have the manual now and it has some missing pages. "It does have pages 4-3 to 4-28 missing, these are circuit description & troubleshooting section pages".
Schematics are good and parts list. Now it is up to me, remove shorts and check what else is blown...

It is so badly burned. Only way to fix this is making new board.
All seems to work fine. A8 line is up from amplifier, A9 is up and 5v rail is good. it looks super bad but all seems to work normally.

If its only a 2 layer PCB you should be able to solder some bodge wires for a fix.
It may not perform to spec, but at least you will have it going hopefully.

I'm sure many here would attempt it.

Does anyone have trick to isolate burned PCB? All of you know it is big resistor when it is burned 100k - 1xxM ohms. I have not done any repairs on burned PCB.

In my previous life when I used to fix consumer electronics, the standard procedure in case of carbonized PCB is to carefully remove the carbonized part with a knife. Carbonized part should come off relatively easy. Of course, the connections made by PCB tracks need to be reconstructed afterwards.

This is what I thought, I have to cut the burned part way. It is going to be 2 big holes. Hmmm let's see what I can make of this...

Make a PCB and fit it in the hole to replace the tracks. As there is a nice shield over it as well you can just solder it to hold it in place as well.

I'd resist cutting it all away, especially if it's only a LV part of the PCB.
Scrape the carboned areas clean, then reseal the burnt area with PCB lacquer or epoxy.

If you scrape it all away until it is clean and then you have in some spots no more PCB left, then you can fix the hole area as well.
In such cases, I have placed a heavy tape over the hole on one side and place the PCB flat and fill the hole with some 2 component
epoxy. This way you can start clean to lay some wires, you can even drill holes through the epoxy and create some connection to the other side.
It takes a lot of time, but it works.

Hello

Here is the service manual: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0Bz2YjD98U6Tfbmd1SmJQdUdqams

As the vendor of the PM5138A manual I would like to ask you to reconsider your actions in freely posting a manual purchased from me for only $10. This is a problem for all suppliers of manuals some which can cost hundreds of dollars. The motivation to copy manuals is not only financial gain but to have this information archived where it would normally be lost. I have many manuals which I have not bothered copying because of the manual parasites and well intentioned buyers posting them to free sites. You will find on sites like this people asking for manuals, posing as genuine requests but they are also just harvesting manuals for their own sites. Please do not repost purchased copyright manuals, it is against the terms of use on this site. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.

As one that in the past has had to scour the world for manuals I see both sides of the fence and more in particular the modern way of mirroring online content to ensure it continues to be available. Guys like you do provide a good service albeit one that should be provided by the manufacturer in the first place, especially if they are still in existence and whether they've been swallowed up by another company of not.
I've found manuals in recent times that were impossible to find online just a few years ago, then uploaded them to another site for prosperity. Since then that particular manual must have bred and is now available from many sites.

This is an electronic forum with many members that can't afford other than older test equipment for which reliability is now questionable, but it gets them into the hobby and they get plenty of support here. We're even building our own database of links to manual sources and we'd be quite happy if you can offer any links free manuals you can share and provide links here:

Obviously this manual has a Copyright sign and "All rights reserved" text printed on it.
So technically you are only allowed to sell this original manual and do not multiply it by copying or making a pdf out of it.
Fluke probably does not care about a manual from 1994 but nevertheless it probably not legal to sell a pdf copy for $ 10

Again post freely distributed manuals to a website such as http://www.ko4bb.com/manuals/

If you are unsure if the manual is allowed to be freely distributed check with the manufacturer first. If you have never spoken to a manufacturer, as a general rule about 99% of them are happy to send out service material for free to anyone that asks. This is why we don't have Fluke, HP and Tektronix constantly coming into the forums waving their arms.

Note that ko4bb complies with take down requests from the copyright owner. Scanning or reselling something (at least in my country) does not imply some form of ownership over the work, or control in it's distribution.

If you buy a paper manual that is copyright by the manufacturer scan it and upload it for free or for sale (worse if for sale) you have infringed copyright so we seem to have the pot calling the kettle black.

Sent from my phone so mind the autocorrect.

Did anyone ever find a copy of this service manual? I've managed to find the operation manual (owner's manual) at http://www.ko4bb.com/manuals/ and a few other places, but can't find a service manual anywhere.

I'm not sure where the legal discussion landed, but I don't think Fluke/Philips is going to care at this point, and I doubt anyone else has a right to.

I had a non-functional one given to me. There is no way I could afford one of these things, so it would be great if I could get it going, but I'm not sure where to start. It powers up, and the display backlight comes on, but it doesn't appear to boot up. I suspect the processor, or a chip with the firmware on it is poof, but it could be something simple.
