DMM like BM857S that also have inductance measurement?
« on: January 13, 2016, 11:30:26 pm »
Are there any DMM around with specs similar to BM857S that also have inductance measurement?

Thanks!

Inductance is a VERY specialized measurement. Most meters that include it do it badly, giving values that are more or less only qualitative at beast, not quantitative. Only one set of meters that I know of does both DMM and proper LCR at the same time. That's the Der EE DE-5003/5004 family.

I had hoped 15 years of DMM progress would have improved the situation! :)

Did a search: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/new-der-ee-lcrdmm/
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/equipment-tools/259415-der-ee-de-5000-true-lcr-100khz.html

Are the 5000 still going strong? Are the 5003/4 better or worse in any parameters?

The DE-5000 is the better LCR but it lacks a DMM. It has higher accuracy and 100kHz freq measurements and honestly is a great value still. The 5003/4 are lower accuracy and max at 10kHz setting but they also have the built in DMM. If you HAVE to have only one unit, then get the 5004 (if you can find it), otherwise get two separate devices.

The Amprobe 37XR-A has an inductance measurement capability, but I have no idea of the accuracy or utility. I cannot vouch for its quality neither although Dave has one and likes it somewhat from his reviews.

IMHO, it is better to get a decent multimeter and get a real LCR meter if you want proper measurements. The DER EE DE5000 is hard to beat. Get that and a BM257S, BM829S, or something similar and eat you cake and have it too.

Most likely it will turn out like that, one Derr dee 5000 and one BM257s a nice combo!
Thanks for the info PedroDaGr8 and  Lightages!
