HP 3478A Front Panel Removal issue
« on: November 02, 2015, 04:01:44 am »
Hello there,

I got myself a used HP 3478a meter and sadly the amps-fuse holder is missing, so I want to modify the front panel to fit another fuse-holder mechanism.
Unfortunately I have issues removing the front panel.
Maybe somebody else here already solved this problem?
Even if I would get past the rackmount studs that protrude into the plastic on the sides, there is still the pressfit connector that connects the main pcb with the front-panel pcb.

I attached a screenshot of the service manual. MP6 is the part in question. It is screwed onto both pcbs and all the screws are somehow covered or not accessible without removing the front panel.

My english isn't that good so I hope you understand what I mean.

Greetings

Do you mean you can't separate the front panel pcb/display module from the chassis?

IIRC there is the some trouble with the 3457A, though it's not impossible.

I believe the front panel detaches from the bezel... From what I recall, the disassembly is somewhat buried in the service manual.

Ah thank you,
It's written on page 64.
Both boards including the front panel have to be pushed through the front bezel as an assembly.
That sounds quite annoying but I guess I have to give it a try tonight.

Thank you for your help! :)

Yay I managed to open it and just upgraded the thing.
I quite like the result :)
I still had some nice Hirschmann binding posts laying around.
And I really don't care that much about a replacable fuse, so I just soldered one in series with the new amps binding post.
