Rigol DS1054Z compensation signal output
« on: April 08, 2017, 08:03:23 pm »
Hi!
I just unpacked, updated and upgraded Rigol DS1054Z (quiet fan on its way ;) ). After a moment of playing around, I found that square wave from compensation terminal of Rigol (yellow) has a poor rise time compared to compensation signal from nano DSO201 ( :palm: ) (cyan).
Is that normal? I thought that probe should be compensated on a very sharp rising edge.
Cheers, Marcin

That is normal; probe compensation for input capacitance does not require a high bandwidth or fast edge.  Limiting the oscilloscope bandwidth to 20 MHz usually makes probe compensation easier.

Some oscilloscopes do produce a fast edge from their probe compensation output which can be used for high frequency probe transient response calibration but that is the exception and it requires a probe tip adapter to make a high bandwidth connection.

The rise time on my DS1054Z is 3.6 uS so the same order of magnitude.

Thank you!
I checked probe again - touching CR 3V battery (it won't get any faster than this ;) ) and it was just slightly undercompensated.
As I'm putting together DIY wave generator, I'll make one fast output on ADCMP580 as a reference edge. :-+
Cheers, Marcin
