Rigol DS1074Z Videos
« on: November 23, 2013, 12:02:20 am »
Well, I decided to do a quick video on the Rigol DS1074Z, and identify its key features. I did not go into details in any of these, as those will be for later videos. Overall, it is a good, solid scope for the money. Not a detailed review, just a scratch n' sniff. Sorry for the crap video quality. However good my dads Canon EOS 6D is, it won't work if there is a dumb user behind it:P.

Focus god damn it! Lol
Why would you buy something ready made when you can make it yourself with half the features for twice the money!

About the probe hook tips falling off. They need a bit of force to snap on. Push them on until they click.

Congrats on your first Rigol video.  In addition to Danny's comment, I'd also suggest you get yourself a cheap video editor.  Something like VideoReDo will do the job, for about 50 bucks.  That way you can easily trim out the embarrassing spots, and not make your viewers sit through while you dink with something.  You can also relax a bit, and not worry about getting everything perfect for 12 minutes straight.

I will take issue with a couple of your comments though.  You claimed that the 1000Z was only suitable for hobbyists and beginners, and I would not agree with that assessment at all.

You also stated that Rigol was poor in reliability and support.  While some might (reasonably) argue that Rigol support is not the best it could be, I don't think their product reliability is bad at all.  In my own experience, as well as reports I've read in forums over the past 6 years, it's been quite good.

So to say that this is not a product you'd want if you needed professional quality and/or reliability is misleading, IMO.

Sorry, what I meant to say that Rigol would not be the best purchase for critical applications. Their reliability, from what I have seen, seems to be fine, but do you really want overclocked ADCS in an instrument that "might" be running 24/7? That was my point. However, institutions and corporations using it for regular testing f their new products should be fine.

Where did you see that the ADCs on the 1074Z are overclocked?  I missed that.  (And at 250M/500M/1GHz, I'm not sure why they'd need to be.)

I want to point out that this was in the DS1000E series. We don't know that this is done in the 1000Z, but since this has been odne before, who knows?

Thanks.  I was aware of that.  However, it would be more accurate to say you want to "admit" than "point out".

Who knows, indeed?  By that logic, maybe they're doing it in the 2000/4000/6000-series?  They're all Rigols, after all.

And if you don't know, why cast aspersions based on idle speculation?  The purpose of your videos (I assume) is to be educational, but when you're passing out potentially false information, you're not educating anyone.

At 8:38-ish, I'm assuming you meant "DS1102E" instead of the scope you're reviewing!   ;)

Don't be sorry.  Just thought I'd point it out in case you do edit your video sometime in the future, you can just overdub new audio over that clip, if you're so inclined.  Thanks for taking the time to make the video, it's cool just to see the DS1074Z up and running.

It's fine. This is my first video, and I plan to do more concerning the DS1000Z. Next I will probably do one on RS232 trigger + decode.

Which trigger types will remain after the 'trial' ones expire?

Everything except: Runt, Window, NthEdge, Delay, and Timeout; and the 3 serial triggers (and their decoders).

Which means you'll still have: Edge, Pulse, Slope, Video, Pattern, Duration, and Setup/Hold triggers active.

Thanks, Mark_O.

I had a look at the data sheet a while back, but I'm not even sure I could tell which triggers were 'standard' when looking at it.  Seems like a decent array of options for the base model.

I just did a Rigol DS1074Z video review of my own. Overall a definite thumbs-up, though I was hoping the fan would be quieter.

Also, I will probably upload a video with the serial decode and triggering tonight or tomorrow.
