UNI-T UT61E or HYELEC MS8236
« on: June 07, 2016, 10:18:32 pm »
Hi,

I'm in need of a new DMM, i can't decide between UNI-T UT61E and HYELEC MS8236. I don't need it for mains or big energy, and i know they dont have good input protection, i will use it for DC under 50V most of time (hobbyist).
I saw that UT61E have great support here on forum and some nice mods, on the other side i cant find many reviews about Hyelec but it looks nice on paper. Anyone tested both or can help me a little to decide?

As long as you don't pet your cat while using the 61E, you should be fine.  :-DD

So I assumed the MS8236 was a Mastech.  Quick search and use that part number but not even close.

If you end up with the HYELEC, please post a few pictures of the insides.

I don't think HYELEC MS8236 it a rebranded Mastech, complete different layout and functions. The HYELEC it 38$ on GearBest, not sure if i can post link here.

If ill go with hyelec ill post some pictures of the inside, but im not  decided yet.

Thank you very much, it looks decent in pics, the leads sockets seems to be better then the UT61E.

Thanks.  Looks a lot better than I expected.   That AKTAKOM AM-1097 they use as a comparison looks interesting.

I don't own either, but going from the specs (overwhelmingly in the UT61E's favor) plus the good reviews, generally, of the UT61E, I believe that would be the better choice.  Another thought is the Uni-T UT139C, it is in the same "class" as the Hyelec (a very quick look shows similar specs, however, the UT-139C has better claimed accuracy), however, it too has better specs on paper.

I will say that Hyelec did do a nice job on designing the casing, can't speak to the quality of the plastics used, but it does have a nice look to it, IMHO.

There is more to it than a case redesign. The internals are VERY different from the Mastech MS8326

Nice looking. Packed.  Pretty high end for it's day I would guess.   Sorry to derail the thread a little OP.....

I have the UT61e and is currently my day to day meter, its a 20.000 counts meter!

The display and resolution is the selling point for me. Other meters I have is ex330, bk2709b, 79II and 289.

The MS8236 is 6000 counts,  what do you do primarily?

I did not compare the Hyelec to a Mastech.  I was only comparing the *specs* of the Uni-T UT61E and the UT139C vs. the Hyelec and how they both have better specs where it counts, IMHO.  I was just commenting on how I like the case design of the Hyelec.  I left it unsaid (I actually typed it then deleted it) that it would be nice if the Uni-T meter internal designers got together with the Hyelec case designers and made a Uni-Hy UH61E.  :-DD

Edit to clarify so that there's no misunderstanding:  And the reason I said the *designers* of the internal meter and the *designers* of the case getting together would be necessary because I am sure the internals from a Uni-T UT61E would not just go into the Hyelec case without modifications to the internals or the case.  I am sure there would need to be a major redesign of the circuit board to get the UT61E internals to fit into the Hyelec case and to have all the functionality (and I would include meeting the accuracy specs in that "functionality" statement) like a UT61E once it is fitted into the Hyelec case.

I rather like the on-board fully isolated usb output. I mean sure the cable comes with the 61e but how quickly does *that* get lost.
