Small analog scopes?
« on: July 23, 2017, 07:42:48 pm »
I've been wanting to get an analog oscilloscope (to compliment my DSO, not to use exclusively) but my bench is kind of weird, my eye level shelf is only about a foot deep and it's attached directly to the wall so there's no space behind it, additionally it's not the strongest material in the world being some kind of particle board. I know the "standard" analog scope is around 20 inches deep which would be pretty ridiculous on my shelves, but I have seen some pretty small scopes in pictures/videos of other people's benches so I know they exist, I just don't really know what models to search for. This would mostly be a toy for me so I'm not looking to spend a lot, let's say $150-200 at the absolute max. Don't need a super high frequency or anything fancy, even a single channel would be fine if the price is right. What would you guys suggest?

How about a PC based DSO or a used Rigol/Siglent?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/152616587340

I think you misread my post, I'm looking specifically for an analog scope. I already have a DSO very similar to the one you linked (mine is a Siglent 1072CML).

Maybe a Tek TYPE 422?

It's not really the form factor I'm looking for (and still seems like it would be very heavy, which is also a problem for my shelves), what I'm thinking of looks like a normal scope layout but just shrunk down, to like the size of an old large VCR or something. I've seen them here and there I just never got the brand/model numbers. I think they're more made by One Hung Lo companies than the big names

That looks like the sort of thing I'm after, thanks. Still would like to hear other suggestions though!

How about a tek 213.
I think Dave has a video on one of these.

Man that would be awesome, looks like the sort of thing people pay a lot of money for though, am I wrong? There aren't any on ebay, not even in the sold listings search.

scratch that I was searching for "413". Sold prices seem reasonable but none for sale ATM

The Tek 200 series nowadays feel like a bit of a toy in my experience I'm afraid, the screen is tiny! Amazing bit of technology for the day though.

Tek 2335/6/7 perhaps? The depth of the scope to the front panel is 36cm (I just measured mine with an RA kettle lead). It does have a cover flap, in my 2336 you can't remove it because there are some trigger functions there. I believe the 2335 has a rack mount option which I would assume doesn't have the flap. A nice example certainly looks the part.

What do you want to use the analog scope for? What is your DSO? I think these question will help to advice you better, than just the size limitation.

Screen size was often related to CRT length due to the amount of deflection needed. A shorter tube with the same size would mean higher deflection voltages/slew rate (tricky with the semiconductors available during the heyday of analog scopes) and/or lower bandwidth. Eventually bandwidth was limited by to the maximum depth of common equipment racks.

Get a real deal full size WORKING analogue scope with rear feet,

an angled IEC power cord if necessary,

and use it as a stand up scope    :-+

No bench real estate required   :phew:

Indeed, on the rare occasions I use a CRO these days it's floor mounted ;-) it's surprisingly ergonomic.

I have a Tek 213.  It was working before the day it wasn't.   Looks like a power supply failure... no volts... no joy... but at lease no magic smoke or The Smell.

If anybody wants it... it's free for the approximate cost of shipping and maybe some beer money.   It is currently partially disassembled and I'm too lazy to put it back together or search for the case screws.

PLEASE only send a PM ONLY if you ARE  (and not just think that you are) skilled enough  to get it working again...  sorry, no noobs need apply...  or bastards that want to flip it on Ebay.   It deserves to be working again and noobs should not be dicking around with line powered switching power supplies.  And profiteers can go cut socks in hell.

A service manual can be had on Ebay for around 10 bucks.   Artek Media does great work.

I have a 214 and a great little (somewhat slow) scope.  The most common problem are the batteries.  If they go bad, the scope will not work even when plugged-in.  Also the batteries in my 214 leaked, which required some PCB rehab, but all ended up well.

I have one of these little Kikusui COM 3101 scopes and they work quite well.
Not easy, not hard, just need to be incentivised.
