Soar 4020 Teardown from mid 80's
« on: January 19, 2014, 06:32:43 pm »
Well i have this old multimeter and been using this for like 20 years, been pretty ok over the years i decided it was time for a regular service/cleaning
of this 28 year old multimeter as i do believe they came out on the market 1985-86 or so.

Well when you look into this old device it is not the most protected on the (V) terminal Z1 must be a zener diode as it is between (V) and (Common) then later up after the red cable there is a small PTC got no CAT markings i assume that was not even "invented" back then but just look at the fuses rated at 250V and the multimeter should be able to handle 750V/AC 1000V/DC
haha long before HRC fuses.

But for being a 28 year old multimeter it works flawlessly :)

What did really happen to SOAR did they just vanish?

Well, they definitely didn't SOAR, that's for sure ;) Sorry. It actually looks quite nice and modern for the times to my eyes. I'm also quite surprised they were already doing autoranging (or at least "soft-ranging") back then - I somehow got the idea of it being a relatively new feature. Maybe that's because no such things were available these sides back then. Well, not much else was for that matter but that's a whole different story.

I'm fairly certain Yokogawa made the multimeter for SOAR (and HP at the time). The similiarities can be seen here.

PS. Thanks for the teardown photos.  I always enjoy seeing the internals especially on meters that are not easy to get here in Canada/North America.

Oh, this is a very decent multimeter even today. Well, compare this SOAR to that Digimer 10... https://www.eevblog.com/forum/blog/eevblog-482-retro-iskra-multimeter-teardown/msg351343/#msg351343
