Since testing caps appear to be my new hobby, I was looking for a full blown LCR meter to replace the cheap component tester I was using.

I found this Philips PM6303 waiting for me on ebay. I didn't had to fight over it since it was listed as "Buy-it-now" at a reasonable price (less than a DE-5000).

The unit arrived in pristine condition and mostly working. After doing some test I realised that it was off a little bit when measuring caps. Ironically I had to use the cheap component tester one last time to test the caps inside the PM6303. I ended up changing all the small 1u and 22u electrolytic capacitors. The big one were fine. Also took the time to adjust the power supply.

The PM6303 is now fully operational and the improvement in measurement speed (over the cheap component tester) is really appreciated.

I have some very awesome REF CAPS that I am curious about. Do you trust this unit enough that I could say "verified and tested" if you checked them for me. (of course not for free, I am not a smug bag).

Cool! I almost bought one once, but it was nowhere near that price. I would've snagged it, too. Congrats on that score! And I enjoyed the irony of using the to-be-replaced tester to fix its replacement.

In other TEA news, I'm enjoying all those HP pr0n pics from the HP Archive. I have a new one appear on my desktop each day.

So, will this setup induce me to add them all to my eBay watchlist? Hmmm... :-DD

Cap Reference testing is a tough one. What Frequency if known were the caps specced at in the first place? Check out wae2w YouTube channel for a frequency generator/oscilloscope method to cross check your meters maybe?

Looking for an idea on what to do with most of this lot of bits? I have BNC, SMA and a few Type N bits I use and can't see me needing more than one of each of these. Anyone keen to add to their adapters or have a use let me know - postage cost only.

Unfortunately, no I don't think I can guarantee anything. My personal confidence is high but also the uncertainty  :)

Nevertheless, I could potentially lower Uncertainty by ordering some precision caps to test the PM6303.

Check the power supply caps , theres only a few. When they go bad they cause intermittent , and permanent(until replaced errors) i believe c5 is the main culprit, but just replace them all.

I would love to use them if your willing. Looks like exactly what I need to conduct further testing.

All the REF CAPS are from current suppliers so looking up test freq's should be rather easy. And I have the manuals for just about everything here as well. I will certainly check out the YT channel as this is the second time I was told to do it...apparently I need to learn to listen better.

Just did a quick rethink and decided to keep the dummy antennas mainly for the enclosures.

Also 250g Satchel pricing to Europe at about $16USD and $15 to the USA is about the best option for freight.

Sounds great, and I'll send them all back as well, with a nice thank you card for letting me use them instead of me having to buy a bunch of new ones.

Good call.  :-+ I was drooling over his bench... https://www.flickr.com/photos/144543740@N05/30686447477/in/photostream/

Woah! That's quite a collection. I didn't realize he was photographing all of his own gear.

I guess you get used to where everything is, but having so much HP gear that looks similar kind of becomes a blur.

I don't need them back. I can't see me ever needing Type 874's en mass so maybe if it suits a pair of 874-BNC would get you adapted?

Woo this is a hell of a capacitor. I definitely don't have the equipment to validate a 1.00008 Nano Farad capacitor  :)

And it's all in such nice condition too.

Dude, chill. It's not 1pF it's 1nF...  ;)

woups .. that's what I meant. Still, try to find something that can give you 5 digits resolution on the nano farad range.
