I ship 60-100+ pound boxes home from my swap meet/surplus place forays during my California visits, and knock on wood the stuff has survived the journey so far.  Carefully packing things so that they're immobilized within the box seems to work quite well.  (Now watch my next shipment get run over by a forklift.)

Hehe. It would be nice to have sub-threads for TEA. As the membership grows, there's more variety to the discussions.

I was thinking more of TEAbay i.e. ebay without the fees :)

That would imply sellers.  We all suffer from GAS, and while some may occasionally sell something, most are in acquisition mode the majority of the time.  Doesn't strike me as particularly viable.   :P

I also have not a single return or damage report but I've received plenty of damage items where the packaging was inadequate including a scope with handle and foot smashed to bits and casing badly dented.

A quick-and-dirty load test (a power resistor I scrounged, but not a particularly high power or low resistance enough one for a good test; I need to dig some more for one better suited) showed no visible ripple on the output when monitored on a scope.

When I replace car batteries I keep the old ones on a minimum maintenance cycle. They make a good load for sinking several amps for several hours, much more civilized than making a bunch of power resistors get hot.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

Here two of my four 628xA. It looks a company named Andrew was the first owner of this 6284A.

The 6284A came from Harrison (Harrison was acquired by HP). My Andrew-Harrison 6284 came from the US, very well packaged - in a huge box. Shipped by UPS to Germany.

The price for the UPS shipment depends on the size of the package. If I'm not wrong, the shipment costs of this very well packaged power supply was about 400 euros. So it was a quite expensive power supply. But in the package was a not too expensive 11A16, 11A32 and a 11A33 too, so over all it was lot cheaper than in Germany - including shipment.

But back to the 628x. Real impressive is the accuracy and the linearity of the meters when calibrated. When the pointer in over the 12V (or any other) bar, you can be sure, the output voltage is quite accurate.

In many cases the accuracy in the lower ranges of some meters is quite poor.

That's the logo of the Andrew Radio Corporation, the company that introduced HELIAX coaxial cable in 1953.

Ah, you can also clearly see the color change in the face plate in khs' photos going from Harrison/HP to HP.

Pat, your supply doesn't carry the Harrison name with the HP logo. So, does yours have a tan face plate? I wasn't completely sure from the photos.

Here from the side. It looks HP used 'old' housing parts for new units.

Excellent supplies!  :-+

If anyone knows anyone reselling these sorts of supplies off ebay in the EU, please let me know. I have been after one for an age. It's either that or I have to buy a shitty Korad or something which will blow up after 6 months and I'm not sure I'm up for that yet.

They’re all single switches. There should be a metal release bar that disengages all the other switches in the group.
The switch arrived, looks like it do the job nicely if I just gently extract the little jumper bar on top. I'll be fitting that tomorrow, thanks for the pointers  :-+

My 'new' Rubidium standard has been running for most of the day, powered by the recently cleaned up HP 6289A power supply.  The power supply seems quite content putting out 24V @ about 0.6A; things are pleasantly warm to the touch.  Looking at the standard prompted me to drag a few of the previously untested counters off the 'to be cleaned and gone through' shelf, and considering that they're all well past the drinking age and have been stored and operated in who knows what conditions, they're proving to be pretty damned accurate in my opinion.

A 5327B is reading 4-5 Hz low @ 15 MHz in, and the 5325B that came from Apex in CA a few years ago is reading 10-20 Hz high at 10 MHz (the tens digit is its finest resolution at that frequency).  I'm also using the voltmeter function on a 5326B to monitor the power supply voltage.  I have quite the pile of long-in-the-tooth boxes on the bench today!

Frequency Standard:

Test setup:

Waveshape on scope (fed into 50 ohm feedthrough termination):

Now to find the time to wring out and clean up the counters!

I appear to have a cat problem, before i delve into the intricacies of that let me first mention my soldering iron is exactly where i want it on my bench.

Where my soldering iron sits the cord hangs off the edge of the desk, i like it that way the cord comes freely out when pulled, gravity withdraws it and i don't even have to reach for the iron as it is at my fingertips.
The problem comes in the form of cats because the second i leave my bench they yank the stand off and no matter what i do they don't stop. One of my cats stopped bothering my workbench altogether when it got whacked in the head by the stand but the main one to do it is far too stupid for that to work.
Any ideas on how to deal with a cat that can learn neither from a carrot or the stick?

I have three options, get through to the cat that my workbench is forbidden ( :-DD |O :horse:);
coil it up which i never think of and consider to be a bane of my existence to be forced to do;
or i let them break the thing by pulling it off.

So this post isn't entirely about the stupidity of cats, i have been wondering whether or not the oscilloscope i bought will require a special probe or will any probe do?

Get you one of these:

And I mean one of the Zep Pro bottles; nothing else even comes close. They cost about $5 with shipping from places like White Cap : https://www.whitecap.com/shop/wc/p/zep-professional-sprayer-hdpro36

You'll want to put a plastic sheet over your gear unless you have unbelievable self-restraint and know you can keep from spraying until they're out of the line of fire; these are no ordinary spray bottle. They are designed so that you can put the full force of at least 3 fingers on the trigger and still have good accuracy; this means you can either deluge him or if your aim is good, give him an enema from halfway across the room.

I have YET to see the cat which didn't learn their lesson when taught by Professor Zep.  ;)

Good hunting,

For training cats to stay away from things, nothing beats a motion activated blast of compressed air to discourage kitty from visiting certain areas - they learn real quick I can tell you!!!  :-DD

there's a few different variants around, all use the same idea:

Both great ideas, except the spray wouldn't work because he waits until i'm NOT there to do it and the motion detected spray, besides expensive, is also unavailable.

Which is why the Motion activated Devices are the best solution - we had a cat who thought our $3k couch was a scratching post while we weren't around. She soon stopped doing it after setting up one of those motion detector things to discourage her.

My only concern is how stupid this cat is, and i don't mean that as an exaggeration. Something can hit his tail end and take a minute for it to reach his brain that anything has happened at all, he is amazed by the water when we refill the dish, good old fashions stone cold brain dead stupidity.  :-DD

I worked for Andrew for several months in Bothell, WA - IBM 5250 terminal emulation on Windows.  Don't know why they were in that business.  It was nice to see the Andrew logo on many local satellite dishes though.

one way to find out, sneak up on your cat and loudly make a Psssssst sound.

Besides those things are stupidly easy to build using an Arduino nano or something similar, a PIR sensor & a Piezo screecher.  :-+
