Uni-Trend UT195DS
« on: May 15, 2017, 12:00:24 am »
Looking for a new personal meter to replace my personal Fluke 77, and also looking to get into Electronics.. my sights a have landed on UNI-T UT195DS, it seems to have features needed for electronics, like duty cycle and micro amp measurement. And phase sequence measurement could potential be handy as-well. At work I have a Fluke 28II Ex and Fluke 787, I like the 787  :-DMM alot.. However we all know they are hardly priced for private use. Also I feel it is pointless with an expensive meter unless you plan to stick to yearly calibration.

I've contacted UNI-T about availability and they where quick to respond.
Code: ("Shawn from UNI-T") [Select]
HAVE is the only distributor who has UT195DS in your area, here is their website: http://www.have-digitap.nl/Unfortunately its not listed yet on their site. I have e-mailed HAVE for more information. Update: Expected in September

I've found one mention of it on a Bulgarian webshop and the price there is 349.00??. (~200$)

3 models, this one being the meter with the most features.
Doesn't seem to be available anywhere yet, except possibly in Bulgaria and Iran.
TUV CE certified nº AN 50369944

Here are some pictures my new  :-DMM

Some observations.

The meter is protected when face down by the "cover".
Leads are a little shorter than Fluke TL175, and does not allow removal of plastic tips.
LED light in display are strange. I can only get it to turn on when its dark, and then the button turns it off.. maybe I need to read the manual ;)

Looks like there is light sensor at the top to control the led backlight.  Clever actually.  Seems like very nice feature, hopefully other manufacturers will adopt it too.

Whenever I see the designation "Pro" on a tool or piece of equipment, I immediately think the opposite. A professional tool does not need to proclaim it. It is usually an indication of a marketing trick to the humble masses.

This meter is obviously aimed at the electrician market. If it actually has the TUV third party testing and is built well, it should be a good meter if the price is right.

UT195DS has only 5kHz bandwidth. The price is similar to Brymen BM829S. I do not like the red rubber much. It should be around the whole DMM.

Is it just me, or does the design resemble CEM's meters a lot? :-//

CEM DMMs are just a bit similar. There are many differences.

Actually, since Uni-T has been very successful in hobbyist market with the UT61, they have to use Pro on a tool.  Otherwise people will just think it is another hobbyist product.

Don't get me wrong.  I will buy Fluke 117 next year.  And yes, 200 USD price is not going to fly in US.

And it got flashlight on the back.  This thing is packed with features.  :box:
kinda odd they left out the temperature measurement

I would love to see pictures from the inside and the board. Maybe you can open it and make some good shots for us? To see the mainboard from both sides would be very helpful in order to see what UNI-T is doing against their sometimes bad reputation about front "design" with CAT ratings and reality inside.

The battery/fuse cover looks fine and the fuses too. So I hope that they did a better job with this meter. My UT71E (European version with HRC fuses but missing MOVs even the mainboard had places so I could easily upgraded them) is not what I expected to see inside when I read the CAT ratings on the housing.

Heres some pictures of the inside. :) I didn't feel like removing the board completely atm, my bench is a mess right now and tiny screws will get lost :D

The worst thing about this meter is the backlight feature, to turn it on in dim light, you have to cover the light sensor, and even then its on a timer. the backlight button only disables the sensor/turns off the light, until the meter has been turned off.

Nitpicks, are missing temperature measurement (it does have C and F on LCD, so odd that its not available), and the short leads on the probes.

Thanks for sending the phtographs. Although the PTCs seem a bit on the small side, overall the DMM looks quite decent inside.  :-+

Thank you that really looks way better than everything I saw in the past from UNI-T. I wonder what "Mr. Transient" would say about this meter ;-).

Hi, I just saw that Reichelt.de has a B-stock of them for just 60 euro!
https://www.reichelt.de/UT-195DS-BW/3/index.html?ACTION=3&LA=55&ARTICLE=225938

The flaw is a supposedly just a small crack in the grey bezel round the display. They show a picture of it.
I am rather tempted...

HKJ did a great review with a full break down of this meter. I was wondering what kind of money it goes for and wound up here. (No listings on Amazon). Looks like a winner if the price is right. Link: https://lygte-info.dk/review/DMMUNI-T%20UT195DS%20UK.html

The full, very impressive, list of his tests: https://lygte-info.dk/info/indexDMMReviews%20UK.html

Hello.

BTW: There was obviously a massive price drop in the meantime.
At least in Europe...  :-//
The Uni-T UT195DS is available for 103.53 € (incl. VAT) from Batronix.

Maybe interesting: Here is a review and teardown of the "little brother" UT195E.
(Similar PCB, identical input protection. Price: 70.21 € incl. VAT from Batronix.)

I have done review and tear down of both of them:
https://lygte-info.dk/review/DMMUNI-T%20UT195DS%20UK.html
https://lygte-info.dk/review/DMMUNI-T%20UT195E%20UK.html

PCB is similar at the input section, but they do not use the same chips.
