What brand of scope probes are built to last?
« on: June 14, 2018, 01:54:58 pm »
The hook tips on the scope probes that came with my Rigol DS1052E are no longer hook shaped. They are more like an L shape so there's not much stopping them from sliding off. I'm not sure if a mm or so of metal has broken off, or if they have just bent opening up the hook.

Do some brands or designs last longer than others, if so what should I look for?

The ones from Testec are decent but you have to realise that probes are consumables. None will last forever.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

How long did they last?

You can get new probes as good as the ones that came with your Rigol for $15. Anything more than that is overkill, really. None will last forever.

It's pretty unusual for them to actually loose any metal, they normally just bend with use. Try gently re-shaping the extended hooks with some fine nosed pliers. It should at least buy you some life extension - best case, complete fix.
Best Regards, Chris

I've had no problems with my Testec probes and I've seen the Testec hook clip sold separately for peanuts, maybe you can find hook clips for Rigol probes too.

It sounds like you are not careful enough and put way too much stress on the hook if it straightens out.

Testec probes are actually really good for the money  :-+
