I'm also very interested in picking one of these up.  Are new units planned for production?

Replying here in case anyone else is watching this thread - As of this writing Dave has 7 uCurrent Gold's on-hand in the shop: http://www.eevblog.com/product/ucurrentgold/ (http://www.eevblog.com/product/ucurrentgold/)

Great! I wanted one too. But why are they so expensive? Is he hand soldering them himself? I can get a good multimeter for that. Maybe offer a lower cost version without gold-sockets, no fancy silk screen or coloring, mostly cheap-ass parts that work mostly identical and then manufactured by a machine in the hundreds, thrown on amazon and ebay ... It's a good product ffs, don't keep it behind a artificial paywall.

The 'Gold-sockets' are cheaply available from China as speaker terminals / binding posts. They don't add significantly to the cost. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=speaker+binding+posts+gold&LH_PrefLoc=2&_sop=15&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xspeaker+binding+posts+gold+plated.TRS0&_nkw=speaker+binding+posts+gold+plated&_sacat=0 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=speaker+binding+posts+gold&LH_PrefLoc=2&_sop=15&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xspeaker+binding+posts+gold+plated.TRS0&_nkw=speaker+binding+posts+gold+plated&_sacat=0)

One of the 2 comments on the EEVBlog store says his gold version is "so noisy that it’s unusable".

Does this 'Gold' version have different components from the original design that's linked from the store (http://www.eevblog.com/files/uCurrentArticle.pdf)?  Dave's comments seem to say that the gold is more accurate but that is probably because he uses higher tolerance resistors, maybe 0.05%?

He made two videos about this. I think it was because he got sold the wrong IC things, even though he bought on a reputable website. The second video included a fix for it.  Just search. :)

Thanks, I found it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VlKoR0ldIE).  Apparently there was a chip made by On-Semi (LMV321) that was used by the contrac manufacturer for U2 instead of the TI part Dave specified and that caused oscillation when a capacitive load was put on the voltage output - the correct part, i.e. the part that has no issues is LMV321IDBVR (Digikey Pt# 296-9567-1-ND).

Got one :D
[EDIT] Mine arrived yesterday - it took 10 days with the cheap DHL shipping option which is OK.  Surprised to see that the package came from NZ, not Australia.  I'll have a proper look at it and report back.

Is there any reason not to get a CurrentRanger over the uCurrent aside from supporting Dave and the slightly higher price point? Serious question.
I've done some brief research and it seems the CurrentRanger does the job. And right now the biggest thing going for it for me, is I can buy it.

Just in case anyone is not aware, uCurrent has been fully open sourced.  No one technically has to wait for it to come in stock.  The full BOM, schematic, and gerber files are available to build your own if you so choose.

I had a feeling it was. It's just too bad getting parts from vendors ends up costing so much in Finland. Parts themselves don't cost much, but the shipping costs quickly get out of hand.

I did notice the place I can get the CurrentRanger tho also happens to have uCurrents in stock, so... my previous post is sorta moot for me. Still might be relevant for others.

Can I substitute parts with some common analogs? Is uCurrent buid around rare critical parts?
