Where to buy the latest Siglent SDS1104X-E?
« on: November 21, 2018, 09:15:43 pm »
Where do (or would) you guys buy your Siglent scope from? Saelig has the discount, of course. But I'm also wondering where I could get the latest-revisioned, hot off the press version of the scope, vs. somewhere like Amazon where I've heard older/earlier revisioned scopes are being sold.

Is there any way or where to buy a scope that hasn't been sitting on a shelf for a while, and perhaps isn't the latest revision? Thanks

What about their official website? They must have a store, I know there is one for EU.

@Coldblackice
I bought my SDS1104X-E from Saelig, and the manufacturing date on the box was just a couple of weeks earlier.  I feel pretty certain their stock turns over very quickly, and you would be getting a “fresh” scope, at a price that likely can’t be beat. Also, this scope has been out for quite a while, and any early hardware bugs (if there were ever any) should have been revised out long since.

Saelig probably sells more than most NA dealers and as an authorized NA dealer buying from them seems like a no brainer. The latest I've got come with the latest FW (26) and they probably have those too.
Simple to update anyway if required.

Or you can buy direct from the Siglent store:

buy from the cheapest place you can, and upgrade the firmware yourself, and you have the same scope as the higher-priced "newer" model you think you're purchasing from someone else.

Maybe Circuit Specialists, Saelig, or Amazon might have a Black Friday deal?

Yeah, black friday/cyber monday are coming, so maybe just look around for places that offer it and just bite if somewhere puts on a decent sale.  I know Saelig has a sale going, but I don't remember if the 1104X-E is on the list.

Awesome, thanks for that. It quells the fear of getting a potential 4-6+ month old scope that's been sitting on the shelf.

From the looks of Saelig's site, it doesn't look like the 1104X is included in the sale :/

That'd be ideal, however, most products -- especially tech -- go through hardware revisions after they're first released, which firmware updates won't touch. It's never typically anything drastic, as the base function of the product will (or should) stay the same, but there are frequently parts that are revised, updated, things made more efficient, kinks/bugs/inefficiencies ironed out, etc.

Someone on another thread even mentioned that the recent models of the 1104X apparently have a new/different fan which is now quieter than the original, which some complained about being loud.

It's why I usually don't jump on new tech when it first comes out, as the first year buyers more or less end up being the manufacturer's unwitting beta testers!

It sometimes also works the other way around, especially with some industries with some of the eastern companies; the first few months the products may get better quality parts and thorough quality checking, so that initial reviews would be better. Once that temporary reputation boost is acquired, some components get changed to cheaper ones, or in some cases some are even removed, and quality checking becomes a single worker putting as many QC stickers in as he/she manages in the few seconds per device there is time... (Slightly exaggerating, but it seems to not be far from truth sometimes.)

NOT claiming all of that applies for this Siglent case. At least Siglent seems to belong to the group of companies that gives the honest level of quality out from the begin, bugs and all, for all the reviewers and first users to reveal publicly. (Still crappy quality control, but at least it seems the quality improves slowly over time.)

Certainly it is better if some nasty design mistakes get fixed (e.g. sample clock PLL section with components with wrong values, or a metal part being too long and ending up transferring noise to sensitive places), even if the supply caps are changed to no-name crap or whatnot.

Don't forget about the missing capacitors though! Either way you can always end up with a product from a bad batch. In the end it comes down to the level of testing at the end of the assembly line.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Ok decision time. Need a DSO obviously the SDS1104X-E or Rigol DS1054Z.  Yes I know this question has been asked a bazillion times.

Need it for repair or telescope computers that use high speed servo drive loops pic17c4’s and PLDs 16CV8s. The motors use 256 tick dual phase output encoders and that are easy enough to see ( although some brushed DC motor drive jitter).

The problem is the signals between the PIC and PLDs is very high speed difficult to see on my 100mhz 2236 tek.

So need high bandwidth to capture this. I also want to see if I can decode the signals between the handset and CPU. It uses 8 bit SAFC517A so it’s older probably all done in assembly.

Lots of other uses needed as well.

So which one.  I’ll need to probably push bandwidth to max from a 100mhz scope I understand the Rigol can with amplitude roll off can the Siglent?   Also need to tap into HC data tx/rx I understand both scopes can.

One last thing....in Australia so it’s difficult to buy the SDS1104-E the Rigol from Emona none are cheap here!

Any input appreciated

edit:
Actually never mind I'll head over to the appropriate Siglent SDS1104X-E Vz Rigol DS1054Z thread.

Many thanks

Talk about target fixation.   I’m sooooo undecided.  I mean the Rigol is great for price (apart from poor Aussie dollar) and Siglent just appears “newer” but I have to decide is it $200 AUD newer better!

Oh the decisions
