Which Oscilloscope should I get?
« on: May 28, 2017, 09:00:42 am »
I'm looking to buy a used oscilloscope, and currelty I get my hands on two models:

Analog, Tektronix 2246 100MHz 4CH

or

Digital, Rigol 1052E 50Mhz 2CH

Which would be the better choice? I'm new to oscilloscopes so need some feedback!

If you can find one that specifically compares these models with information why the other one is better than the other, please do share :)

Neither are cheap but if they are local and you can pickup, then the Tek.
If it has to be shipped the Rigol, DSO's can handle the shipping better.

They are not local but also not far away. Both of those prices include shipping. So hmm

I'd go for the DSO because it will offer way more features than an analog scope. I never want to go back to using an analog oscilloscope. I have had more than enough of that!
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Neither is massive value for money.

A brand new Rigol DS1052E is only about $80 more and you'll get a garantee.

It's 150$ more for a new one where I live

Did you check out the Rigol prices at Instrumentcenter.se? :)

If 2 channels are enough:
I would not go for the Rigol DS1052E, but better to go for the Siglent SDS1202X-E.

If you really need 4 channels:
Squeeze some extra Swedish crowns together, and go for the Rigol DS1054Z.

Thanks for the link! I'll just go for the DS1052E for now honestly.. I think it will be enough for the type of work i'm doing.. and then I'll see if my boss would like to order a better one at that site you linked.. and it's pretty small and portable so I could just bring it home after work if I need to do something :D

If it's for a company then they're 269 Euros in Europe.

If this is for use in a company I'd get a much bigger budget and buy something new. If a company can't afford a 2000 euro scope then I'd be really worried about how they can pay my salary.

This company in Sweden also rents out scopes, and probably you can loan one for a week to play with it and test it. This way your company can first evaluate an expensive scope before actually buying it.

It must be nice to work in a company like that.

In my experience you better demand good tools or go find a different employer. If there is no money for good tools then there is no money for raising your salary and/or to invest in product development. Making do is fun for a while but in the long run it just holds you back.

Yes, luckily money isn't an issue. It's more about convicing my boss that it is needed.
