Cleaning technique for FLIR lenses?
« on: March 24, 2018, 05:18:02 pm »
Hi all-

Are there any special cautions or concerns regarding cleaning FLIR lenses?  Or do you just treat them like you would any other expensive multicoated optics?  Thanks.

The FLIR E4 Useful information thread provides details of cleaning.

Do it wrong and the lens anti reflective coating can be damaged.

Other than perhaps the cleaning solution you treat them the same as any other lens, EXCEPT most people don't know how to properly clean lens to start with.   The lens or product manufacturer should specify what solutions are safe to use and what not to use.  If you don't KNOW how to properly clean a lend then go get some expert advice.  If your idea of cleaning is just rubbing a lens to clean it then I'll just tell that you can ruin a lens the first time that do that.  Especially if the lens is uncoated Germanium.

Another thing people do not realise about thermal cameras is that they are actually pretty tolerant of dust on the lens. FLIR recommend that cleaning only be undertaken if the lens is heavily contaminated. They further recommend that external thermal CCTV lenses are best left alone and no wiper used to clean the window. Their tests proved cleaning was rarely needed.
