Panasonic Grid-Eye sensor teardown
« on: March 15, 2018, 05:49:31 pm »
So I had a few 8x8 Panasonic Grid-Eye sensors lying around and curiosity got the better of me...
Sensor die is approx 3mm square, surprisingly large ROIC die.
Not quite sure why they need that internal copper plate - maybe thermal equalisation?
Lens/windlow looks like 1 piece of silicon, flat on outside, convex on the inside
Each pixel appears to be a group of 6 elements - maybe in series for higher sensitivity? Documentation says it's a thermopile.

can you add a scale to the images?

The reason for the large ROIC die is likely because you need an extreme amount of processing to get relatively accurate temperature-linear values out of thermopile arrays.
I have a relatively cheap 32x32 array with very little processing on-board, and the datasheet has three pages of non-stop compensation formulas and mechanisms to get the temperatures.

The square lens is really odd though, and looks very rough.

Patents could describe your photos.
For example WO2011162346A1 if anyone is willing to actually read it  :D

This is the same thing?

Sounds like the occupancy sensors.
