Useful Emissivity Table + other Emissivity related info.
« on: February 04, 2018, 07:52:45 pm »
I found a useful Emissivity table that details specific paints and their performance.

https://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/attachments/4193558-Emissivity%20Materials.pdf

I was looking for performance specs on Krylon Ultra Flat Matte Black. It was detailed on the table.

The NASA JPL web site provides detail of special tests on specified paints, including Krylon Ulata Flat Matte Black......

https://masterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/reference/paints.htm

Krylon Ultra Flat Matte Black scored well and is in the top 4 paints tested.

Sample plots attached. The Krylon is plot 1602.

The original source of the Emissivity table is www.Infrared-thermography.com.

The complete set of 3 tables is here:

I wonder if JPL shares more data in some papers about infrared astronomy. There are a few detectors that operate in the LWIR microbolometer spectrum.

Specifically WISE at 10micron for example. There are only a few ground based telescopes with infrared detectors in the 8-14nm spectrum, but it is possible due to the window being between 5 and 9.

but the topic here is black paint emissivity. I guess you want the best possible ratio of least reflection and pure emission of IR radiation? Is paint really the best option or could you go for some material?

Can you read up on what airports use for their blackbody reference on fever screening?

The BB references at airports are small versions of the standard camera calibration charts, generally 0.99 or better emissivity.

See products from the likes of CI systems, HGH Infrared, SBIR etc. and on these the surfaces are often micromachined as well as painted.  That effectively gives you a load of tiny cavities.

For high temperatures a cavity works well, so you have the 'BB-4' from Omega and similar.  In this case the cavity is white ceramic and can go up to 1000°C, about 1 inch diameter.

An 8 " 500°C source is rather uncomfortable to be near.  Definitely no nylon or chocolate allowed nearby.
