Can you englighten us about what "calibration" is?

Do you just check the equipment (ex: Fluke multimeter) to see if it's within the tolerance spec for that model? And if it is, then it's considered "calibrated"?

or do you go in, open the equipment up, and adjust it so that a reference 5.000000 volts is read by said equipment as 5.000000 +/- .000001, then its considered "calibrated"?

Adjustment is not calibration by definition. Calibration is checking if an instrument is within spec.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

I was hoping the OP would reply as they're the ones offering this service.

On their website, it says:
Fluke   Various   Multimeter   $50.00

So what? I send them my Fluke, and they send it back to me with a note that says "Yes, it's calibrated" if the meter is within spec of manufacturers rating?

$50 for the assurance that "yes, it's calibrated" or is there more info that I'll receive?

And what if the meter fails spec of manufacturer?

I get a "No, it's not calibrated" for my $50? That's it?

Need the OPs answer for this, though he sounds good and legit.

I once sent 3 identical instruments to a calibration service.  Upon return and connected to the same source the three instruments literally read 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0.  (Units and instrument are not important).  Sent WTF message to calibration service.  Their response -"Tell us which one is right and we will make them all the same."

Anytime you try a new vendor in this area do the best you are able to check their work.  When you find good calibration services value them.  Let the world know.  And let the world know about the others.  The one in my story doesn't exist anymore so no naming is necessary.

The word 'calibration' and what it means is a confusing term to many. At the oil refinery I worked for our instrument shop used words like 'validate' to mean to just measure, compare, and document the difference(s) between our shop reference(s) and any specific instrument under test. When we sent out a device for 3rd party validation, we would consider it just a validation of our reference device, not any repair or adjustment to attempt to bring the device into compliance with it's specification.

Most times we were just paying to keep a sticker current and up to date to comply with some internal or external rule or regulation. If one of our reference devices 'failed' it's validation we would generally just replace it with something new.

In my eyes calibration is the adjustement refering to a trusted instrument what we call a standart.

A calibration can pass to get the calibration tag / certificate,
or fail, to get the message it is not possible to calibrate the instrument bec. it needs at first a repair.

a trustful calibration lab have the acredition of one or more of the metrology institutes of the world, the standarts will be calibrated by them.

greetings
Martin
