  1. LCD backlights make wonderful general purpose lights, once you remove the polarizing filters. I’d try mounting them to the ceiling, and see how well they replace conventional hot cathode fluorescents.

  2. Just tighten them to the point of stripping the threads out and separate the two halves of the unit. 9 times out of 10 there isn’t a threaded insert. Just replace with philips head after servicing.

  3. Mount the screens on the wall, without the bezel, and put FlightRadar24 playing… That sould be interesting ;P

  4. In five years, Dave will need another 3000 sq.ft. to his house just so he could keep his reclaimed dumpster treasures.

I once was like that too. Then one day I figured out that the floor cost, per sq.ft. was not worth the opportunity cost.

I said _figured out_. That did not (yet) entail throwing out all of my junk accumulated from 35 years (and some of my dad’s dating early fifties).

One of those days I’ll send you a few oldies from Dad’s treasure cache… I wonder how’s the postage to ̶A̶u̶s̶t̶r̶i̶a̶ Australia

  5. Grab the KVM. Such units can be useful in many situations. They are probably being thrown out due to them using virtualised instances now.

Also a suggested use for all those monitors; a Dave ‘talking heads’ wall… Ala blue Man group.

  6. Dave ! if the phaser printer is a solid ink one, i recommend you to get it ! it can print kapton PCBs directly !! Tried it here 😉

  7. Dave,

Junk that Belkin and use that APC you have. It’s just better.

Oh, and you might want to do an introductory video about imaginary power – you keep reading VA as Watts and that’s only true in one kind of load (after power factor correction). And why VA is generally higher than Watts when measuring power.

Think it’s been a little while since you did another beginner video.

  8. Hello,

@3’49, you read TPV. TPV is a huge tv set manufacturer. So huge they swallowed the old Philips TV division 😉 Mo more european players (makers) here.

You can ebay the processor board !

  9. “Hello, my name is Dave and I’m a hoarder.”

    “HELLO DAVE!”

  10. What would you do with the KVM and all the cables?

    eBay!

I love the dumpster diving videos. Reminds me of when I was a kid and we would find all kinds of treasures at the county dump :). Don’t think you can trash pick there any more…

  11. Hey,

Thought you might like this video on freeganism I made recently. It’s for a competition called Biomovies and I have until December 19th to get as many views as possible – every view gives me a vote. So, if you do like it, and could post about it, I’d really appreciate it!
