How To Use Sheet Symbol With Varying Values
« on: September 10, 2020, 10:33:44 am »
I have a schematic that has an adjustable voltage regulator inside. I want to make a sheet symbol out of this to use in other project schematics.
The question is I want to use the same sheet but with different resistor values inside to have regulators with different voltage outputs, so that the circuit is the same but the values of resistors are different.
What is the best way to do this without duplicating the circuit eachtime for every voltage? Can we use variants?

Cheers!

Variants would probably be the best way to go however I have not tried them with sheet symbols. It should work but nothing is guaranteed as far as Altium goes. I would imagine the base sheet that makes up the symbol would be the target of the variation.

If the Duplication is for the very same PCB use Variants, if it is for different PCB use Snippets.
As easy as paint by number.

The duplication is for the same PCB but I want to have 2.5 V and 3.3 V versions of this sheet at the same time. The upper level schematic needs both power supplies to operate. Is it possible to use 2 variants at the same time?

If the difference is a divider resistor, can always stick the FB pin out on a sheet connector and put the reference resistor there.

Annotation works for component values, but won't generate varied net names for power ports unless you use strict hierarchical project settings.  Strict hierarchical is usually more annoying than useful because no power ports connect between sheets, you have to connect all of them through sheet ports.  If you like to use descriptive net names for power supply sections, for example, this may not be an effective method.
