Netlabel precedence
« on: March 19, 2022, 01:50:54 pm »
Hi,
I have a multi-sheet design and I have connected RS485 chips to some connectors with Netlabels, So the problem is that the connector Netlabels takes over the RS485 net names, How can I control that,

see this example some RS485 channels are connected to some connectors

and Here is the PCB net names

I want the PCB to have the RS485 net names instead of connector Netlabels.
Is there any way or option to do that?

no. you can have only one netname per net.
what on earth are you trying to do ? this is counter to all logic.

I have around 50 channels of RS485 and a bunch of connectors with 2-3 Different configs, like 5 or 6 RS485 channels should route to specific pins, so this is what I came to, so that the schematic and PCB should be readable!
In this picture Connector number 8 has these RS485 channels form 37 to 41, so the schematic is readable in my mind!

why don't you put the RS485 netlabels on the connector ?  why do you use intermediate net labels ?

I was thinking of making rooms for connectors too, So they can be used inside PCB, But I think this way as you describe is the way to go.

Saw a, TI? board with multiple labels. They work as aliases in SCH.  Only one is passed to PCB though.

To minimize confusion, best to use a consistent label, whether the pin type/number, signal name, etc.

You could use net ties to bridge two net labels on a same wire. Google for Altium Net Tie.

Use net names to… name the net. Use ports to connect things together without naming the net. (Unless you set the project option to do so, as mentioned already, which of course I would not do in this instance.)

(Ports are like segments of wire that have simply been hidden from view.)

Indeed, your design may be a candidate for multichannel design, in which case you can adjust the naming pattern to a point.

P.S. You can easily convert net labels to ports or vice versa using the Smart Paste feature. Select the net labels, cut them, then Smart Paste > as Ports, with the order set to stay the same.
