Sure, but if you then download the license you can use it without having to sign in. At least, that seems to work for me, but maybe it's just biding its time :)

When you download a standalone license the first time, you're mating it to the machine you use. And then you can't do that again on another machine without getting support involved to deactivate the old license, no? This is how every other standalone-licensed software I've ever used works. Matlab specifically has a workaround where you can certify that the old computer is destroyed or no longer accessible, which I think works by tattling on you if that old computer ever phones home again. Not sure, since I never used that function fraudulently, I just always forgot to "deactivate" before moving licenses and uninstalling the old matlab.

If this is case, that's eliminate risk to rehosting and installation later, as example if in 2025 you suddenly need AD 20 without dealing with Altium...

In any event, what seems to be your platonic ideal that you buy a perpetual license and never have to talk to Altium again for the rest of history is pretty preposterous. ANY time you buy into technology-enabled DRM-style licensing, you're stuck being dependent on the company still being around when your machine finally needs replacement or upgrade.

Standalone ALF licenses are not node-locked.

Not necessarily. I bought into Living Cookbook and had tons of good recipes in it when the company went tits  up and their authentication servers disappeared. Kaspersky dicking with my network interfaces then did for my PC and that's it. We're surviving on beans on toast now. It's very annoying.

But that's one I didn't have my eye on. Usually, I will find a hack for something I want to buy, and then buy it. Sometimes I buy first and then find a hack, but that's not always successful. In the case of AD I am confident that should the worst happen I can still work with the version I have, regardless of PC, one way or another.

I got it today for a bit under 3600 USD total over 12 months, so about 300 USD per month.

You got ripped off.... They offered me less than $1K to upgrade. Yes that is right, less than a grand. I know many of the people here would kill for it, but I am going to pass.  I just do not need it as i am not planning to do much PCB work for the next year or two.

Edit: Having said that, the offer looked more desperate than aggressive, i wonder what is going on at Altium...

If you say so...

Except that it wasn't an upgrade for me.
I know many of the people here would kill for it, but I am going to pass.
And why do you think anyone here would care if you pass or not?

I seem to be able to get all the way through to the payment screen of checkout using the EAGLE upgrade promo code and it seems as if there is never any check for an Eagle license (not that I'm sure how they would check): https://www.altium.com/altium-designer/?promocode=EAGL1

I think if you called them they would do it for that price anyway even if you do not have Eagle.

I paid standard amount at the time (2016). Can't remember exactly but somewhere in $6500 range including 1 year sub.

Well if anybody else wants to take advantage of this I've just confirmed that it works and no confirmation of an Eagle license is required. The best part about it is you can just do it totally online - no having to deal with the sales staff!

It seems with Altium, its good to talk to them rather than do anything online. You get better deals.

The $3600 you're claiming is a ripoff wasn't an upgrade of an existing license.

$1000 seems to be a pretty standard "c'mon please renew your subscription?" price.
