legs on the pads or on the board?
« on: July 03, 2014, 06:36:44 am »
Hi,

I am learning Altium, I have made the footprint and want to embed the 3D step model as shown below picture-

Is this correct?

the legs are within the pads, and touching the board. what I am confused about is whether the legs should above and touch the pads or should it be within the pads and touching the board plane as shown by the picture.

Many thanks

I always put the models 0.05mm above the pads. You need space for the solder ;)

how to do that?

I imported the step model, then used the "set body height" option and then board level.

also i found out that the model in my picture is not on the correct side

T, B, F (Tools / 3D Body / Align Face with Board), click the model you wish to align, highlight then click the face you wish to align.

You may need to clean up orientation afterwards by double-clicking the model and editing X/Y/Z rotation and standoff height manually.  If nothing else, it's easy enough to eyeball a few microns in the zoomed 3D view.
