plated edge vias altium
« on: August 18, 2016, 10:57:31 pm »
Hi everyone,
I would like to plate a hald via on Altium but i'm not doing it right. The result should be like this:

I have my shape of my design with two half holes as you can see in attachment. If I put a Via it create a ringof copper, I just want the edge of the hole.
What is the simplest way to do it?

Thank you very much

It a limitation of the current version, plated holes are rendered round. Hopefully they fix it..dont hold your breath.

You could export it into something like solidworks and render it there for a photorealistic pcb.

So you think that i can leave the ring plated and during the manufacturing process it will cut the ring in half via plated?

Thank you

This is how they are always made, anyway.  The hole is plated, then cut through, leaving a plated semicircle.

Altium just draws the one part (plated hole) as before cutting, and the other part (board outline) as after cutting.

However you draw it, be sure to discuss the castellations with your PCB fabricator.  If they run this through their typical process you likely won't achieve good results.  Routing straight through a fully plated hole usually results in the copper outside the route line getting crammed into the hole, so generally they'll either adjust the routing CAM or route across the holes before final plating.
