Static board insight
« on: March 15, 2024, 10:19:02 pm »
I am fairly sure that the board insight panel used to track the mouse. That is, move the mouse and one of the pair of X/Y values would track the live mouse movement (subject to the grid step). But now mine doesn't. I think I did something the other day when I was trying something else, so perhaps there is a setting that I've changed. But I'm blowed if I can find it, and I've gone through all the ones that seem to be available.

The symptom is that none of the values change unless I move the mouse out of the window (so the board insight panel hides), and then when I move the mouse back in and the panel reappears it is updated. But again remains static. Using INS to reset the delta origin change the origin but doesn't update the panel until it hides and comes back.

AFAIA, nothing about my system has changed recently, and Altium hasn't updated (it is 22.3.1) so there's no reason for any change.

Dear all,

We are happy to inform you today that we have this fixed for you in version 22.5 as described in the following section:

On Windows 7 the PCB Heads-Up display was not correctly updating the location coordinates as the cursor was moved.

We appreciate your comments and rating on this solution.

Thanks on behalf of the Altium Product team.

Just to tidy this up...

There are bad things said about Altium but on the plus side they don't cut you off the moment your support subscription expires. I have seriously expensive software which won't reinstall without a support subscription, for instance. I found that despite being off the books for some time I could still download the full offline 22.2.1 (just prior to the bug insertion), install and activate it and then update all the extensions, etc. So full marks there.

Anyway, I installed the prior version and then found that the reason it took me 2 years to notice this issue is because I don't use it! (Not sure why the HUD is displayed, but perhaps that's what my messing about enabled.) Instead, for footprint creation at least, I tend to use temporary grids and/or guidelines to accurately place pads and stuff.
