Altium License to be "sold"
« on: April 06, 2023, 04:19:03 am »
Hi.

I am considering selling my genuine up-to-date Altium license and retiring later this year. Subscription is due in a month (worth up to AUD $3K, although Altium will give me discount), but I am considering not renewing the subscription and bypassing the messy Altium 365 and do the B2B stuff the old way until retirement (a small risk to me because two of my clients use Altium 365). When I say "sell", I mean transferring the license to a new owner after payment of an agreed price.

Has anyone transferred a license to a different company before without hassles from Altium?
If I sell later this year, would I be better off selling it with the subscription or without?

cheers,
David

The Altium license specifically forbids selling your license, search the terms for "transfer". They don't want to compete with second-hand licences. However, their position is on legally shaky ground at best.

Don't expect any assistance from Altium whatsoever. If you sell a license, the purchaser will need to pretend to be you, using your Altium login details and with access to the email address registered to your Altium account. Maybe try setting up a new email address specifcally for the purpose of license sale.

Perhaps offline installer with standalone license file could be an option also.

The EULA allows transfers, but only with their permission and paying the "then-current transfer fees" (See Section 13, Assignment). I don't know how open they will be or what the fees look like.  I know years ago I tried to get them to acknowledge a transfer of Protel which I inherited from a company I co-owned that was being shut down, and they were absolutely no help.

Maybe you can make a deal with one of your existing customers. I'm thinking about not renewing your own license, and if you do need altium, then "rent" a PC (and office space?) with one of your customers for the last few months.

I have transferred Altium seats on two separate occasions to a new company.
Both times it was relatively easy, but I need documentation from the previous company that there was a transfer. The second time I don't think the subscription was current, but the company receiving the license was to immediately update the subscription status. You'll need to talk with Altium though.

Thanks for the responses, gents.

Maybe I should end the subscription and just use it for hobby use until my end-of-life or Altium's end-of-life, whichever comes first .

One hint about Altium subscriptions... never renew at end-of-calendar year. Mid-year is the best. This is because the annual major release at the end of each year tends to have many updates (bug fixes) soon after until it settles down. You don't want to end a subscription with a bug infested release. Mid year seems to be the sweet spot.

cheers,
David

I renewed the subscription. Bloody expensive, but I got a discount by the friendly Altium people. Ironically, companies keep calling me to do R & D work for them and I have a full workload on my plate. Retirement scares the heck out of me.

I was told by Altium I CAN transfer the license to another company only if it is under subscription. So if I retire later this year, I will offer the fully license and subscription at a great price. After that, I won't be able to use Altium, which I have used since the old Protel days (actually Autotrax!). I'll go into poor man's mode and use KiCad for personal stuff. KiCad is actually not that bad. I tried it... it's OK.

I just want to say that I'm interested in your license.

So if you want to sell it please remember this thread :D
