I would like to check the dimensions of the component before adding it to the schematic to make sure it fits.
How can I see the footprint dimensions of a component?

Open the library, and edit the footprint.
Or paste it into an empty PCB document and measure it there.

that's where library management is very important : name your parts properly and give meaningful descriptions. attach proper manufacturers and manufacturer part numbers. name your symbols and footprints with a <type>-<manufacturer>-<part number> syntax or use the JEDEC names like TO220 DO35 0603 SOT23. Design proper courtyards, pin markers. It takes the guesswork away.
A lot of libraries floating around are pure garbage.
