PCB Design by Excel
« on: October 24, 2014, 11:19:13 pm »
Is it possible to do this in Altium (or another software package):

I have a need to design many boards where many components need to be located in specific places.  Is it possible to place components using and excel spreadsheet which contains info like .pcblib file location, component name, x location, y location?

That would really help automate the design of these boards.

The PCB list panel works like a spreadsheet. You should be able to copy and paste from excel to set X and Y locations of placed components.

Maybe more like a mess of connectors positioned by mechanical constraints.

Yes, if it's an ordered set, Paste Array, or preferably, multichannel design (using Rooms -- copies routing too), is the way to go.

Yes, you can arrange them with the PCB list. Done it multiple times.

PCB List looks like it will work.  I'll give it shot later today!  Thanks!  The components are to be arragenment is random patterns, so arrays wouldn't work.  Thanks for your help!
