Title: Amp Hour #36 - Designing Dave's New Workshop
Post by: Zad on October 05, 2011, 04:32:49 am
I love this sort of thing. A new "clean slate" and the first page of a new chapter. I can't wait to see the new place!

Dave, in order that we might give an informed opinion of what you should have in your new lab (and where), is there any chance you could show us the floor plan? The sales PDF might do, but I understand if you want to keep some details private. Someone could probably convert it into Sketch Up format and we can have a bit of fun placing benches, power, lighting etc. I can do it in 3DStudio Max, but that is probably a bit of overkill...

Regarding Makerbots/Repraps: Is it only me who can see the Emperor's New Clothes? After viewing many YouTube videos, the resolution is horrible, they are clunky and slow, and just can't compare with a 5-axis (and in many cases a 3 axis) miller.

5.77m deep, 6.55 wide on the back wall, with a fire hose reel cupboard on the front right corner (maybe 2sqm), plus the pilars as you can see (and another one behind the fire cupboard I think.

Isn't there some office space on Minna Cl., Belrose becoming available soon?

Last I heard, only about a handful of people left.
Shame about that multi-year lease  ;D

The CEO's office, before she got the boot!

Yes.

Yes, but the problem is that rent costs about the same as the interest repayments to buy one!

Nice looking HQ -- and that lasted, what, two years before they said "sod it, we're off to China"?  Ouch.

(It could just be that I'm not cut out for the fast-moving world of corporate property -- I've been in my serviced office here for seven years now!)

Almost 3 years I think. The building was built to their spec and they took out a long lease.
Each cubicle had 4 x 1GB Ethernet lines

The China move was of course just another flight of fancy in a long and distinguished list  ::)

How do you get on using office space for a workshop with regard to smoke, fumes and dust from, soldering/etching/drilling.

I've heard of some offices having super sensitive fire detection equipment and putting some pretty heavy restrictions on what you can do in the space.

Soldering has to be filtered of course, so I'd need a proper flexible arm extraction unit. It wouldn't set off fire alarms anyway. The only exception to that I know of is desoldering very old boards can sometimes trip them.
I don't expect to do much mechanical work there.
Few restrictions, provided you don't annoying anyone else.
