Interactive bom in kicad (https://forum.kicad.info/t/interactive-html-bom-plugin-for-kicad-5-0/11713) is a nice addition and should be standard in all EDA tools!
However, there are some more third party tools. I always use VisualPlace to manually place boards.

There is also SMT Assistant, which was mentioned before here on the forum, which is more limited. Doesn't use gerbers but a bitmap, not very good for big boards.
