The Amp Hour #7 — Love Robots and Pantyhose Screens

I'm envious that you are taking a trip to Boston, my favourite US city. If I had the chance to move over to the US, it would be around Boston. Kinda European, but very American. At the end of September the New England leaves might just be turning too. I don't envy you that drive though! Great countryside, but it must be over 12 hours drive from Ohio.
I think Digikey and Farnell (Premier Farnell Newark) must post their results at around the same time. Our local paper covered the Farnell results (they are based near me); Last quarter's profits are up 47% to £23.8M on a revenue of £252M. Farnell say that is mostly down to increased orders from the electronics design community. As of today, their market capitalisation is £993.99M, which works out at just over $1.5bn. The share tipsters are promoting them, as they see that they have room for growth in pretty much all markets. In the past year or two, Farnell really do seem to have got their act together. Decent prices and the Element 14 community all help. Amazingly, only 1/3 of US orders with them are online! It might be an interesting item for me to write a blog post about. Which reminds me - I have linked to The Amp Hour from my (very new) blog at http://electronicsdesigner.blogspot.com , hope that is ok.
On the subject of US export restrictions - the other day I was looking at one of the new fast ARM based parts, I forget which manufacturer. There was a notice saying that due to government restrictions they wouldn't be able to export them until October! The ARM is designed here in the UK for goodness sakes! I bet it was fabbed in Singapore anyway.
