Advice needed about wiring a 10 pin RJ45 port for ethernet pass-through

(1/2) > >>

Marmotta:
I'm building an PC-in-an-Xbox One system and was planning on reusing all the I/O from the console on a custom PCB where everything would pass through to the PC motherboard. Unfortunately, the ethernet port seems to be causing me more problems than I'd anticipated.

I'd foolishly believed that I could have just used the port as a passthrough, but it seems that there is continuity across all the though-hole pins, yet conversely I can't get any continuity from those pins to the connections on the port. I can't get any further information on the ethernet connector as it's a Foxconn part. I've included some pictures of the motherboard as well - pins 5 and 6 appear to be connected to GND via a capacitor and all the others seem to just go straight to the Realtek MDIO Ethernet controller on the motherboard.

You have a ethernet port with integrated magnetics, done so they have the port and the required isolation transformer in a single part, saving board space and saving on assembly, plus the 2 port LED's are integrated into the top of the port next to the latch, making it compact.. Look up the part number, or look for other datasheets for similar parts and you will find information.

wraper:
There are ports which are bare connectors with pins directly connected to wires. Other type has integrated transformers.

pcmad:
rj45 connector are 8 wire max

Sure, on the RJ45 side yes, but the two more pins on the PCB side are the center taps of the TX/RX transformers.
