Most probably but creating problems and fixing them is part of the fun/learning!

Heh, i can't say you're wrong there! However having it work on any AA's would be preferred :)

Try rechargeable batteries: they have a lower impedance, providin they're decent of course.

The boost arrived and it seems to hold 5.5V all the time. Even dipping the input down to 2V gives an output over 5.4.

It seems to have worked with the car anyway, I just need to sort out the control fully now!

 What is the specification of the boost converter you have measured ?

I didn't do much measurement apart from the output voltage as I was pressed for time but I have two spare so I can see how they behave under load when I get a chance
