Try rechargeable batteries: they have a lower impedance, providin they're decent of course.

The boost arrived and it seems to hold 5.5V all the time. Even dipping the input down to 2V gives an output over 5.4.
It seems to have worked with the car anyway, I just need to sort out the control fully now!

I didn't do much measurement apart from the output voltage as I was pressed for time but I have two spare so I can see how they behave under load when I get a chance
