Title: AM2302 vs SHT11
Post by: Dave_PT on February 03, 2021, 11:56:31 pm
Hello everyone.

I have a device (already a few years old) that used an SHT71.
This sensor broke due to a fall.
So I started looking for a similar sensor, but it has already entered end of life and that is why it is very rare.
Alternatively I started looking for SHT11, which is more common, cheaper and compatible.

However I find lots of articles for sale similar to this:

But from what I see in the datasheet it seems to me that the protocol is not compatible.

Can someone confirm this to me? Can you explain to me why you advertise the AM2302 as a replacement for the SHT11?

Thank you.

Trust the datasheet and not the reseller! If the protocol between the two is different according to their datasheets, then it's a safe bet that the AM2302 will NOT be a drop-in replacement.

Thank you.

The two (SHT71 and AM2302/DHT22) absolutely do not use compatible protocols. Weasly advertisement. You could probably replace any humidity sensor with another, at least technically BUT that does not mean that they are drop in replacements.

The DHT22 uses a proprietary serial protocol and the SHT71 uses I2C.

You can get an SHT71 on Digikey for US$27 https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SHT71/5872295 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SHT71/5872295)
On $bay, I see them for US$16.

Unless you have the project code and can program, I would say that you should just pick up another SHT71.

In short, just another wrong sales ad that was copied too many times between hundreds of sellers ...

Thanks for confirming my certainties, I could be evaluating something wrong.
