Analog division of two inputs + result indication: viable?
« on: February 05, 2023, 04:16:44 pm »
I am developing a simple electronic constant resistance load (pure analog so far) for which I would like to add a display showing current value of resistance calculated from actual measurements.

To get it, I can divide two inputs: 1) input voltage - by - 2) voltage drop on the current sense resistor, representing current.

Question 1: is there a reasonably simple pure analog circuit that will divide two input values and provide result as a voltage output?

Question 2: same thing for indication, are there any ICs that will take a voltage input and handle all the decoding and output the value on a, for example, 7-segment LED or LCD display? I need 3 digits with a decimal point.

From what I could find so far, it doesn't sound reasonable to try and implement this using analog components, and it'll likely be much easier to use a small microcontroller that will get the input voltages via ADC, do the calculation in software and output the result on pretty much any kind of display.

But, maybe I am missing something and there are ways to implement this in a simple analog circuit? Are there any ICs designed for a similar job?

There are analog multiplier/dividers chips, e.g.:

There are also A/D converters which can drive LED/LCD displays directly. The ICL7107, for instance, is a venerable device:

and other display-oriented A/D converters can be found here:
