Apologies for Wasting Bandwidth -
« on: January 25, 2019, 08:19:51 pm »
- but I'd like to know if one can post pictures here and, if so, how to do it.  I couldn't find a FAQ or answer in Help.

Easy once you know how.  :)

Bottom of posting page is Attachments and other options, click that and follow your nose.  ;)

They are added to the foot of your post as thumbnails where when posted you can Copy the URL and then insert it anywhere in your message .....then highlight that URL and click the Insert Image button to place it within IMG flags.

Another tip is to Quote someone's post with images embedded and examine the syntax.
Have a play, you'll soon get the hang of it.

Note: There are some limits for attachments.  They are displayed when you expand the "Attachments and other options" section, but I will copy them here FYI:
Allowed file types: doc, gif, jpg, pdf, png, txt, zip, tar, c, h, hex, bas, xls, odt, asm, wav, aiff, wma, mp3, flac, asc, ods, xlsx, py
Restrictions: 25 per post, maximum total size 2000KB, maximum individual size 1000KB

Alternatively, you can have images hosted elsewhere and just use the [img] [/img] tags.

One additional point...

While some members here have unlimited lightning fast internet, there are others that do not.  Being mindful of those, it is considered a courtesy that images are scaled and/or compressed before being uploaded or embedded inline.  A 4000 x 2000 pixel image of a front panel is rarely necessary.  (I have a personal rule of setting the longest side to no more than 1000 pixels, unless there is good reason.)  Good lighting and sharp focus are often more important

Where you have a series of images, it can be better to just leave the post with the thumbnails from the uploads and let members click on the ones of interest.  Also, a member might have an extended album and they host it on things like Imgur and just include a link in their post.

As far as how to resize images and adjust things like contrast, curves, etc, to best advantage, also to add annotations, there is a free bitmap editor, TheGimp, which is available for free for Linux And other Unix OSs Also there is a native Aqua version for OSX and also a version for Windows. the three major desktop platforms.

From Gimp it is simple to resize or do any of hundreds of things to images, then "Save for web" when you want to save an image. Usually JPG is the smallest for photos.

Although, sadly over time, many useful images have been lost due to the external host links failing. There was a big issue with this when one of the free image hosts suddenly started charging a few years ago. I think it's always better to add sensibly sized images as thumbnails to your posts if possible, they won't get lost that way.

You must be referring to the Photobucket hiatus.

It wasn't so much the introduction of charges (I had a payed account anyway) but it was the exorbitant scale of the charges they suddenly announced, and the fact that all existing image links were broken (unless you payed the charge) which wrecked many sites because PB linked images were everywhere.

PB have since reduced their charges, but many people would not touch them with a bargepole now- talk about management shooting themselves in the foot. :--

Photobucket now allows for a free service - but they watermark every image.  Looks terrible.

I had a friend with an online shop where all their images were hosted on Photobucket.  Once the sh*t hit the fan, I had an urgent call to sort out their image hosting.  Everything was moved onto paid hosting - and they now have full control without any of the reams and reams of crap that Photobucket threw all over any page you were trying to work on.

They are never going back.

PB have since reduced their charges, but many people would not touch them with a bargepole now- talk about management shooting themselves in the foot. :--
Exactly the case for my friend.

Imageshack did the same several years ago. I had to repost several images of my teardowns to the EEVBlog server (Fluke 179, Harbor Freight meters, Mastech Variac etc.) and, whenever I see an interesting thread with missing images, I try to warn the OP about that as well (VC8145 teardown was one of them). Preserve these poats for posterity!

That works for attachments as well, but it's a bit of a fiddle. Post the attachment. Go back to the thread, click on the thumbnail of the image to enlarge it, copy the image address (the procedure depends on the browser you're using) edit the post and paste the address into the image tags.

I think for trivial stuff, such as "What did you buy today?" I may start using imgur. Posts like that, if the pic goes away in the future it's no huge loss, and it saves a little storage space on the forum server.

That works for attachments as well, but it's a bit of a fiddle.

Yeah, I wish there was an easier way to put the image inline.

I use irfanview to reduce everything to a personal preference of 1024 by 768.  I will embed a couple of images.  If I am going to post more than 2, I try to remember to leave them as thumbnails.  Thankfully, I do have internet that I am satisfied with, 100 Mbps download.

I second that...
Use Irfanview and use Batch conversion/resize option if needed, or resize each image manually.

Set the largest dimension to something reasonable like 1024 or 1600 and check "Preserve aspect ratio" and Irfanview will automatically set the other dimension to the right value, so no matter if your image is landscape or portrait, you get an image that's looking right (1024x768 , 1600x1200).

JPEG with quality around 75-85 preserves enough detail for a forum.

After PB did the dirty, I looked around for other image hosting sites and boiled it down to Flicker and Imgur. What is the general feeling about these two? Or is another site favored?

I've been using 'Resize' since win98 days and it still works fine. It's a single non installing <1MB .exe with accompanying .ini file. It does single or batch drag and drop resizing. Resizes by percentage or height and width and has adjustable JPEG quality. It also automatically appends a file suffix of your choice to the resized files. I've never found anything to beat it for speed or efficiency.

Yeah, not gonna sign up with Google or create an account just to download a file.

Irfanview is 2-3 MB (32 bit or 64 bit versions) : https://www.irfanview.com/
And there's a "portable" version that's around 5 MB and can be extracted in a folder and ran, without making changes to your system: https://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/irfanview_portable

I doubt that software (which looks like someone made it in a day in Visual Basic) is as versatile as Irfanview..

the advanced button gives you this:

Huh? Ah, ok. Lots of other download locations available, search 'Resize Peter Bone'. EDIT: No of course it's not as versatile as irfanview, it's just single purpose - resize images as simply and quickly as possible.

.zip attached too if you trust me.

I absolutely love IrfanView and I have a paid license (not mandatory) - the unique features I found to be extremely useful are the lossless JPEG transformations and the batch conversions.

However, I see great value in simplicity and the Resize package shown above probably does an excellent job in its single task. I use something similar on my phone that does only one thing, but it does very well.

I use Paint Shop Pro 4.12 from 1996

It's simple to use, covers all the basics, and runs 99.5% perfect on Windows 7. Plus, I paid for it and I'm gonna make sure I get my money's worth out of it.

I got a more recent copy of Paint Shop bundled in a promotion from Corel and it works well. One detail about the older versions, however, is they lack native support for the PNG file format, which is sometimes mandatory for certain types of websites.

I keep a linode instance for all kinds of static files and random experiments.  I used to use it for mail, DNS, VPN, and all sorts of things in the past, but these days mail is hosted by google (G Suite), for DNS I use AWS Route 53, for VPN I buy it by the month whenever I need it for travel (I currently use NordVPN), repos are on github, haven't used svn in almost 10 years, and so on.  Actually, just checked the pricing of S3 and for my needs it'll cost me a fraction of linode (I only need about 5GB), so I think I'll look into migrating and just fire up a suitable EC2 RH/CentOS instance whenever I want to experiment with something.  Which is like five times a year or so.  It's a bit overkill to run Apache and a Linux instance for static content serving when an object store like S3 is sufficient.  For my needs even CloudFront would add up to $.50 per month or something. (I think my R53 bill is 73c per month. :))
