- but I'd like to know if one can post pictures here and, if so, how to do it.  I couldn't find a FAQ or answer in Help.

Easy once you know how.  :)

Bottom of posting page is Attachments and other options, click that and follow your nose.  ;)

They are added to the foot of your post as thumbnails where when posted you can Copy the URL and then insert it anywhere in your message .....then highlight that URL and click the Insert Image button to place it within IMG flags.

Another tip is to Quote someone's post with images embedded and examine the syntax.
Have a play, you'll soon get the hang of it.

Note: There are some limits for attachments.  They are displayed when you expand the "Attachments and other options" section, but I will copy them here FYI:
Allowed file types: doc, gif, jpg, pdf, png, txt, zip, tar, c, h, hex, bas, xls, odt, asm, wav, aiff, wma, mp3, flac, asc, ods, xlsx, py
Restrictions: 25 per post, maximum total size 2000KB, maximum individual size 1000KB

Alternatively, you can have images hosted elsewhere and just use the [img] [/img] tags.

One additional point...

While some members here have unlimited lightning fast internet, there are others that do not.  Being mindful of those, it is considered a courtesy that images are scaled and/or compressed before being uploaded or embedded inline.  A 4000 x 2000 pixel image of a front panel is rarely necessary.  (I have a personal rule of setting the longest side to no more than 1000 pixels, unless there is good reason.)  Good lighting and sharp focus are often more important

Where you have a series of images, it can be better to just leave the post with the thumbnails from the uploads and let members click on the ones of interest.  Also, a member might have an extended album and they host it on things like Imgur and just include a link in their post.

As far as how to resize images and adjust things like contrast, curves, etc, to best advantage, also to add annotations, there is a free bitmap editor, TheGimp, which is available for free for Linux And other Unix OSs Also there is a native Aqua version for OSX and also a version for Windows. the three major desktop platforms.

From Gimp it is simple to resize or do any of hundreds of things to images, then "Save for web" when you want to save an image. Usually JPG is the smallest for photos.
