You did not mention what you are connecting this to? If it is typical consumer or prosumer gear, then 2.5V is very hot for nominal working levels. Consumer standard is -10dBu (around 0.5VPK) Note that the data sheet specs for your (unidentified) MP3 chip is probably the max limit, and not the nominal standard operating level.
