I've bought a pot from eBay which is meant to be panel mount. I've also bought a box. I've drilled a hole around the right size, but the pot has a raised notch on one side. What am I supposed to do with it? Am I supposed to cut out a hole, and if so how? I guess it's to stop the pot spinning over time when the knob is turned.

E.g. this one, see the raised notch on the left. http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/displayProduct.jsp?sku=1760792&CMP=e-2072-00001000&gross_price=true&{copy:mckv}|pcrid|14164337469|kword|{keyword}|match|{matchtype}|plid|{placement}

Use the template in the datasheet and a drill bit of the right size....... Or cut it off and have it spin in the box when the nut comes loose or somebody tries to wind it to 11.

Get a file. File out a notch in the box with the file.

The quick and dirty solution: if the box is a plastic one, heat up the metal notch with your soldering iron and press the pot into the plastic (and through the hole of course :-).

I've cut off the tab in the past. As long as you use a locking washer and tighten things sensibly you don't need to worry about it spinning around.

Cut off the tab, assemble the whole unit, fill the case with potting epoxy.  Guaranteed NOTHING will move ;D  ;D  ;D

Rub some black felt tip or chalk onto the pin  and then push the pot into its mounting hole from the outside this will leave a mark as to where you need to put your hole or notch.Surest way to get the right position.

If you don't want a hole showing thru the panel, mark the location for the tab and partially drill into the panel (ie don't drill all the way through), then trim (shorten) the tab to fit.
