That depends on what you want to do with it. Do you need to integrate with existing hardware, or just your own devices?

How big of a network?

In general, there are not too many physical protocols better than IEEE 802.15.4. LoRa may be an option too.

It all depends on actual bandwidth requirements, number of devices, direction of traffic, etc.

I'm not looking for some particular project, but just want to know so that i can learn and do experiments,
probably my applications would be in 100 meters, low speed data transfer, network of 100 devices

There are not too many options.

IEEE802.15.4 and a custom higher level protocol is probably the closest fit. LoRa will follow. You can probably make something like this work with Nordic NRF24L01+ (just not the clones that are all over the place).

ESP8266 if you can tolerate the router and can find one that can sustain 100 devices.
