Product development lifecycle and documentation

Hi every1

After going through some of Dave's old videos I came across video #138 where he talks about the Top 5 tips for graduate engineers. In this he mentioned taking a project from start to finish documentation, design, testing and deployment. Basically the whole shebang and as a serious enthusiast I wanted to do this with a couple of my personal projects.

Now I have researched the typical project lifecycle for this kind of project but I would like to know from the people who have done this a couple of times where I can get some good information as well as a few templates for the documents that are part of this lifecycle or a copy of such a complete project so I know where to start.
I am working on both the software and hardware for this and would appreciate it if these information sources included both worlds.
