Bubble on PCB during desoldering

(1/1)

Mp3:
Hello everyone,

Sorry to make another topic so soon after my last. i was getting ready to replace a damaged component on a very old PCB, so i cleaned the solder joints i was going to desolder with a little isopropyl on a q-tip and waited about a couple hours for it to evaporate.

I desoldered one pin, desoldered one on the opposite end, came back to the next pin, and right after i put my iron on two small bubbles appeared nearby on different pcb tracks...!

i've desoldered many things before so i don't believe it's an issue of not knowing how to desolder, i only left the iron on only long enough to melt the solder and take it right off!

does this mean the board is ruined or those tracks need to be repaired...?

Are you saying the pad lifted?  I have heard that there is an epoxy or glue for that.  If the pad is lifted only a little, it should be OK.  If it is really lifted, you can end up with micro fractures.  This is nothing a well done bodge wire can't fix if you want to be cautious.  At any rate, the board is not ruined, it is fixable.

Some years back, I got roped into replacing blown caps on ELO touchscreen monitors.  They were all "refurbished", probably by a team of untrained gorillas.  Cold joints, no solder at all, lifted pads, usually including lifted traces.  If I remember correctly, there was only one that was so bad, I was never able to get it to work.  Sometimes it took hot glue to glue the cap and bodge wires on both legs to the nearest pad to make it work again.  So don't worry, easily repaired.
